Hiya,
Is it possible to make something that works like Second Life using a computer game making programme? Like the war games things you see where lots of people play together. Would it work in the same way?

Thanx ;)

Well, if Linden Lab did it, then presumably it would be possible. What you need is a team of about 50-100 experts in different fields of computing, a secure warehouse to store all the equipment in plus the hardware to go in it and a few other things and you're away.............

Which goes back to what i said, according to the resources suggested by the OP.

Yes. After all, SL is an example that SL can be done! And it was done with a lot of the same tools that make other computer games.

But if you're asking, "Can SL be made as graphically rich as the war games?" the answer is "probably not". SL is slow and laggy and graphically a little clunky because of the things that MAKE it SL...the ability of residents to create objects and assign textures to them. Communicating the information represented by those objects and textures to and from everyone's computers is a huge task.

A game "engine" won't allow you to do those things. You can use it to create other game modules, but it just won't have the tools to let players make and upload things.

Improvements are being made slowyly. Windlight and Havok IV will bring a lot more realism to SL.

I play WoW and I am not sure how much exists on my own hard drive and how much is streamed to me when I log on.

But SL in general does not exist on my hard drive, (excluding the special browser client of around 20 mgs plus catch) All that you see is streamed to you via the net/your ISP/the SL servers. Therefore I cannot see how you could emulate WoW performance with now current technology, although of course I am no expert and am well prepared to be technically corrected

Everything exists on your hard drive. Everything save a few bits of data that tells your client what to compose each NPC and PC of, but even then it's just calling up bits of data already on your hard drive. No "resource data" is streamed at all, just character positions and such.

You are right in principle, but I think your numbers are off. 5 to 10 people would be more like it.

There are lots of games that have be 'modded' by the gamers who play them. You can reskin the characters, create entirely new levels, sometimes even import 3d objects. The gameplay itself can even be fundamentally changed. These do require a lot more knowledge of gamemaking and the tools needed to make such things are quite unfriendly.
