I have heard that SL and Vista don't get along well.

SL runs fine on Vista and 8800's (relative to it being SL) if one has a good machine with plenty RAM (2gigs+) and up to date drivers installed correctly. Lag is "normal" in SL in very active, highly populated areas with lots of scripts running--even on the most high end machines with the fastest internet connections. There can be conflicts with other things that might be specific to your machine. Turn off all security temporarily and see if that speeds it up.

If you are using the mainline client ... don't. Use the RC.

Welcome to SecondLife and to the forums. The Release Candidate is at http://release-candidate-secondlife-com.s3.amazonaws.com/Second_Life_1-20-13-91658_ReleaseCandidate_Setup.exeI'd *strongly* suggest being especially attentive to the version of graphics drivers. This "have trouble typing" thing sounds like some crappy nVidia OpenGL drivers for Vista, a couple generations back. Also check driver settings (especially OpenGL) in whatever controls nVidia supplies for Vista, and the Edit / Preferences / Graphics menu--including the Hardware Options window accessed from that tab. (Just the default Graphics settings for that card may be more eye candy than you really want, although "can barely move" sounds like something more basic.) (As for running multiple instances: I often run 2 or 3 instances at the same time on much less powerful hardware, and get 20 FPS or better. It's a Linux box, but that's *not* an advantage when it comes to nVidia OpenGL drivers.)

From: Solar Legion If you are using the mainline client ... don't. Use the RC. I think this is bad advice unless you specifically know that the RC fixes this problem for this exact hardware. The RC is meant to be used by people interested in reporting problems back to LL and for general use as it may have serious bugs still. The Released version (what you call mainline) is supposed to be the one that is used generally. The v1.19.x version works very well on most people's hardware if it is up to spec. My advice would be to eliminate non-viewer areas of potential problems before attempting to use the RC (as a last resort) otherwise your problems may in fact become worse and not better.

I have recommended it to several people with various issues - one who could not even log into SL anymore on the mainline client! It usually fixes those problems. For all we know the OP is a victim of the massive memory leak present in the 1.19.x software.

number one under msconfig.exe make sure that on the boot tab under advanced it's set to 2 pressors most of the time that vista ships it is set to one pressors even if you have a duel or quad. also make sure your max menory matches what you have on the same tab.
might also sujest moving up to 4 gigs ram sl is a menory hog on a system that has memory leaks so the more the merrier

I run SL on 2 GB memory just fine. You don't need more memory. Things to check: Under Edit/Preferences/Graphics, click the "Custom" button: what's your Draw Distance? Try scaling that way down to 96 meters or so, for now. Also, what sort of internet connection do you have? Is it DSL, Cable, etc? Have you done a speed test, as suggested by someone else? That test can be found here: http://www.speedtest.net/Don't just test your local connection. Test your speed to both San Francisco, CA and Dallas, TX, as those are where the SL servers live. On your computer, shut down any extra programs that might be running in the background. Stuff like iTunes, Skype, etc, keep "helper" programs running that you might not even know about. Shut those down using the Ctrl-Alt-Del function. And of course, double check your Nvidia drivers. Welcome to the forums!

From: Mjolnir Uriza might also sujest moving up to 4 gigs ram sl is a menory hog on a system that has memory leaks so the more the merrier Windows Xp 32bit and Vista 32bit do NOT support more 3 Gigs of physical memory. Even if you have more, the remainder will go unused. It's a limitation of the 32bit operating system. 64bit Windows and many flavors of Linux will recognize, and be able to use more than 3 Gigs. Mushu, my specs are similar.. AMD 64 X2 5600+ DFI Infinity SLI 2x MSI GF 6800gt (256mb) in SLI 4 Gigs Patriot DDR2 800 (3 gigs useable in WinXP PRO) I also get the hard to move thing, but ONLY when I have both SL windows up at the same time (ie- not minimized). If you minimize one before you bring up the other one, it seems to work. Also seems to help when running 2 instances of SL at the same time to use a larger than normal fixed page file size.

Where are you getting bad framerates? You might just need to get away from very laggy places like OI and some spawn points.

For all we know the OP is a victim of the massive memory leak present in the 1.19.x software. Lots of mights and maybes in there, my advice is still sound. You do not know if the OP's problem is actually the viewer or that the RC will fix it. It would be something to try once other possible problem areas are investigated and discounted as being the problem. It is great that the new RC is getting more stable but the fact remains it is still RC and that means it has not become the LL considered stable viewer yet - period. If the Released versions have such major issues as massive memory leaks then the RC could have big, but not obvious, problems too. You are forced to upgrade an RC but not so the Released version. The next RC may not be as good as the current one either. At best even the Release Viewers that LL produce are considered by many to be only alpha quality. I do track the RCs and so know that things are getting better but even the feature set has not been fully finalised yet - be careful recommending a new viewer too quickly is all I am saying.
