The initial statement that LL pushed was TRUST being the overriding factor for IDV.

Now, let's drop the age part for a moment and dwell on this trust issue.

Will you trust others more because they verify themselves? Will you trust them less? Or will it make absolutely no difference in your decission making?

Personally it will have no bearing in my decision making.

Thanx for your time :)

I thin kthe only ones who will get any use out of tying thier real identity to thier avatar are those who contract with high-profile or large companies to build a presence in SL. For your average content seller, it'll likely be business as usual.

The age verification may well be good for anyone who runs a "mature" space and belives they are having trouble with under-age people. But I'll bet most won't bother to check the "Mature content" box, lest thier customer base shrink.

Much ado about nothing.

It won't make a difference to me either, because the fact that someone's SSN matches what a third party on the internet has in their database doesn't tell me whether someone is trustworthy or not. Lots of untrustworthy people out there with valid SSNs, after all ....

Assuming that identity verification will work the same way as age verification, the only thing that actually gets verified is that that person has access to the submitted data, not that it truly belongs to them. And there seem to be questions about whether it actually verifies anything in cases with completely fictional data.

If someone discloses their name through IDV, it'll still be necessary to get additional proof so I don't see how it really factors in with trust at all.

Would you trust a politician? Would you trust some police men? Clergy? The guy in the Pizza Hut that maybe hasn't followed the hygene laws and not washed his hands before handling your food?

Trust is something that is earnt, not an assumption.

You can trust that displayed Identity Information:

Is either that of the acount Holder.

Or one of the Account Holder's parents.

Or the ID information of someone who was the victum of some form of Identity theft.

ahh Trust

its SLwonderful.

No.

I can't decide if "trust" (the word) is the smoke or the mirrors. In any case, it won't change how I operate in our out of the virtual world.

My sense of trust (the feeling) regarding others in SL is based entirely on my dealings with them in-world and what they say on the forums.

Trust has nothing to do with a national identity number.

It's not an issue of trust. And it IS having an impact already. I received 4 offline IMs already from places I have vendors talking about changes they are having to make now that LL is doing this. I will quite possibly be losing vendor spots, and thus income in SL.

Gambling did away with casinos...it seems this is a way to do away with adult materials in SL. Think about it, SL is a place where many many people can come to act out their most extreme desires safely...would YOU want to be forced to make the following declaration?

"Hello, my name is Mrs. Sarah Jane Smith, mother of 3, age 42, living at 123 Main St. Anytown, USA, and I like to dress like a chicken and have sex with a horse"?

Attaching a specific ID verification to your account will do that, if you enjoy such practices.

I haven't decided yet. Since I don't go around dressed like a chicken (or doing horses), that's not so much of a problem to me. But, I AM a grandfather, and I DO make and sell things in SL that are considered outside the normal things you would see walking down the street of Anytown, USA.

I may not dress like a chicken, but my avatar is a 7' tall demon with a tail, horns, red eyes, and burns when he hovers...

Not exactly what you see on main street either.

I don't like the idea of giving up my SSN or DL number. Identity theft is a real problem. It's an easy thing to do. Giving that information to a company that has been proven to sell the info they gather doesn't seem like a wise choice.

As I said, I am undecided.

I enjoy SL. I enjoy making the things I sell in SL. I enjoy the people I meet and talk to in SL. I think we will see fewer of the things I like in SL as more and more of this verification takes place.

Some of the most untrustworthy people I met here in sl are definitely older… I still regret letting a certain someone animate my avatar when I was young and noobish.

Trust is Taking people AT THEIR WORD Until such time as they prove unworthy of such Confidence.

This system has as much to do with Trust as an Hooker has to do with Abstainance.

Let's suppose I know that SL avatar X is indeed RL person Y (never mind teh possibility of identity theft from borrowed documents etc).

Suppose I then conduct a business deal with that person, and they subsequently rip me off. I don't see how knowing their RL identity would help me any. Even if they live in the same country as me, the amounts of money would need to be quite a bit larger than the regular SL transaction for it to be worth teh court expenses in recovering the money. And if they live abroad, fugedaboutit.

Trust is all about reputation, not linking an avatar to a RL name. And reputation is as easy to build within SL as anywhere else. many Sl avatyars have an impressive reputation, but there's barely two dozen who have publicly identified their RL name, and that move happened long after they had made their SL reputation.
