Why are there no sound commands in LSL?

Silly question, and probably has a pretty good technical reason, besides the ability to play media files, why aren't there any commands like llPLAYNOTE(pitch, volume)?

My guess is that a MIDI controller was probably far under the LL radar when SL was first being developed and it would be more profitable and less restricting to have us residents upload a sound for each note. (^_^)t

Some cheap sound cards cannot output MIDI because it requires synthesis.

Ironically, some very expensive sound cards also cannot, because they assume that if you are that much of a sound geek you would have your own synth. :)

The whole sound setup should be updated so where you can just stream audio into a prim and control how it loops as well as built in timer fuctions. The current llplaysound and llloopsound are silly. 9 second Wav Files are just not enough for some applications, specially those requiring predictable results.

How about adding a StartTime parameter to sound functions. For some purposes, I can live with llPlaySound( bla bla bla, StartTime). I might put the StartTime a few seconds in the future.

This assumes that the viewers synch their time with the servers. The Viewers could queue these commands up, and start each sound at (about) the same time on all viewers.

when I saw the title of this thread I was afraid it was that troll that blamed the system for his coding errors and lazyness to study the wiki, I'm glad this wasn't the case :)

btw, there are a couple of requests on the pjira with different approaches to this idea
