Hi all
An RL buddy of mine is thinking of joining SL for business purposes.
I had a wee search on SL to see if his real name was out there and it is already in use.
Now the profile of this avatar with my buddy's name looks like it hasn't been used since registered a while ago (no comments, groups etc) and I was wondering if there was a LEGAL and PROPER way of finding out who owns it and asking if my buddy could use it.
The surname in question has done the rounds and been retired I think, so he couldn't even register a similar/close substitute.
Also the avatar registered with a non-capitalised initial (grrr) so is there anyway at all to change this?
Cheers Metal

Accounts can't be transferred without LL's permission, and they give that only under very limited circumstances.

Congratulations and shame on you! You are a bit of a slut.

No on all counts- sorry-
Can't change name and is against TOS to "give" your account away- Suggest friend gets creative with naming - sorry not much help.
Occasionally LL will register say a John Microsoft or Ralph CocaCola -those would be corporate names and would more than likely cost big money, whole sim/region/island purchase and who knows what else. For John Q Public- he may be better off just calling himself something average and really work on advertising.

Why not register his full name as a first name, and pick a descriptive or clever last name.

Why would you use your real life name? Isn't the idea to become someone else?

Some people do not seperate SL and RL and some like it that way so they use there first real name. I have an alt with my real first name as I do not really seperate these too. Ive got nothing to hide and like sharing details (to a point)

Your friend can use his first name even if someone else is using it, as long as he picks a different last name from the list. Other than that, Phoenixa has a really good option if he wants more than just his first name.

If my real life last name came up, you bet I would get an avatar with my real life name. I wouldn't actively use it - I'd just want to have control over my own name so some idiot doesn't post crap to all the SL-related forums and websites and get my real life self a bad net reputation. SL avatars come up in web searches too, you know!

From: Metal Bookmite For business reasons like other people and celebs have done. My buddy is a celeb in his business field. There is an option for Celebs to have their own name, the way to do this is out there somewhere, maybe someone will post the link, however, it may not be the solution you are looking for. If he really is a BIG celeb with enough money, it is always possible to do something, you would have to start discussions with LL though.

In general, unless you are a famous celebrity type with good reason to promote yourself as your Real Life self inside SL, the Lindens frown on people using their actual names as their SL names. That is one of the reasons they don't allow us to choose our own surnames, but instead force us to choose from a list of rather odd surnames.
A rock star or movie star can pay a VERY high fee to get a custom name that is their real name, for use in SL, and they have to pay a high annual fee to keep that name.

My SL Surname is my real surname and through a problem when i first registered, PC crashed during registration, i lost my first name so got the one I have now, shame i couldn't get Iain tho it would have been a nice thing to have been able to do
