So I was working on something with a few small prims and I was entering the z location in the build window. I was trying to type '2000.14' and somehow my fingers slipped and the prim disappeared. I know that with the new viewer the prim is somewhere between 4096? and ground level. I tried flying along the general area that it was but I didn't see the prim. It was a small prim too.
What else can I do to try to find it?

Outside of hiring a search team and/or flying up and down it's Z axis while having your prims highlighted via the About Land > Objects thing......I have no idea.
Sorry.

if you fly up while the edit prim thingo is open, often it will focus on a prim you come near. or you can go into the land menu and 'show objects' for whatever primtype it is (grouped or whatnot) and flay up looking for the highligted prim.

I've lost count of the times I've done this. I've almost never been able to find it. Eventually it gets returned to me. I'm just realizing I'm lucky I always sent it sideways because I don't know how you would find it again if you just sent it up into the sky on your own land. I hope someone comes along soon to help you out.

Ugh. You can try setting "select only my objects," going into edit mode and shift dragging a big box over the area the prim might be. Keep going to different heights and dragging a new box. When you catch your prim in the box it will be highlighted and captured with your edit tools.
This is why I generally work with micro prims in a sandbox, so auto return will send the lost ones home. Still, I don't want to think about the number of times this has happened to me on my own land.

If you have mistyped the z axis by missing the decimal point, it is exactly 4096 meters up, that's where they stop if you do in current version.

From: Rika Watanabe If you have mistyped the z axis by missing the decimal point, it is exactly 4096 meters up, that's where they stop if you do in current version. It could even be 0.14 meters down... look in your floor. Seriously, I would look at 4096 and 200 meters also.

I put a Jira in for this to have maximum movement of prims settable so you could set to say 50m and override if you needed to move further. Gawd knows how many concrete slabs I've sent into neighbouring sims. I remember when I finally worked out that the blue items on minimap in neighbouring sims were mine http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-8368

Maybe a scripted object with a sensor that does a scan, go up loop?
I think Scan-foo is able to do that sort of thing.
Does Mysti-Tool do "find my objects"?

better late then never... when working with stuff you can loose in a blink, i just change active group and set auto return to a couple of hours if i can`t finish it in a couple of hours, i`ll never will if it dissapears, it gets returned and trashed if i forget, just rez the returned object(s) if some one abuses it, delete their prims and ban them must say i`m on an private island so no security issues except for stuff dissapearing if not doing the abouve

I'm not inworld to find the exact name, but I have a prim finder thing I use when I do things like that..
You can im me inworld and I will tell you, you type in the name, if it was object, it scans for object named object, then this thing pops out and you sit on it and it takes you to the prim. its the coolest thing.

I think Scan Foo will send a prticle beam to the nearest prim that is yours so if you turn it on and fly up slowly you just might get lucky and find it. I know I had to do that a few times while building things you REALLY did not want someone flying into accidentally. Can you Picture a couple flying along and the wife saying "Dang baby did you just hit a duck or a D-ck?"
