I was just readin' this article...which yeah the subject matter is old news:

http://bits.blogs.nytimes.com/2007/10/10/free-the-avatars/

...but one of the Comment responses made me think for the first time "Hey...I ain't so sure I want Xio's account (including payment info)locked into ALL of the (future) Grids associated with IBM & LL."

...then again, wouldn't I like to take my favorite "toys" from Grid to Grid? Tough pick.

There have even been days when I almost had a heartattack just because I built something in-world and couldn't take it into BETA to test it, from the Main SL Grid. I wonder if the standardization will increase or DEcrease the amount of Alts

You wouldn't want to use your SL password to log on to a third party grid, no matter how reputable the company that's running it might seem.

The way I see that and other articles in that line, you'd most likely still have seperate passwords for each grid, but you would have some way to import your current avatar and *possibly* inventory from one to another.

I think it will be a long time before this is a simple, seamless procedure.

Right now, most of the "other grids" are so incompatable or different or incomplete that having any of my avatars able to go there is about as inviting to me as stepping through an airlokc into deep space, without a spacesuit. But eventually I think this will be a good thing, once the other grids mature.

I like the idea of transferable avatars and names but most of the other worlds I've seen are less realistic than SL. Being a bit narcissistic, I wouldn't want to compromise my appearance in a world with inferior graphics. If it was a world with superior graphics, well, that'd be different!
