Hi, is it possible to change the default building texture from that boring wood texture into something else?

Yeah and the physics sound, properties too, I would like concrete myself rather than wood. Or even just a grey 4x4 texture as default. It could save a lot of rendering lag.

You cannot change the default plywood texture so that another texture appears in its place, every time you start SL.

However, it is possible to change the default texture in Build.

Go to the Advanced menu, and scroll down to Debug Settings

Type defaultobjecttexture in the top text box

In the bottom textbox you will now see the UUID for the default plywood texture, ie
f132bcd8-28ca-781e-4638-bfaa7ffd2dea

Change this, using any full perm texture from your Inventory, then relog.

The next time you log in, and create a new prim, the plywood texture is still there, but if you select the prim in Edit mode, and go to the Texture tab, and double-click the Plywood texture, this will bring up the Texture Picker dialog. If you now click the Default button your new texture will replace the plywood one.

Only worth doing if you intend to create a few or more prims with a different default texture.

I don't think it's possible to change the default, as such, but you could rezz one of each shape, change the texture to something you like, then take the objects back into inventory. Thereafter, instead of using the 'create' function, you would simply rezz the shape you want and modify.

A side note to all builders-

Not all viewers have the same default- I am only aware of Kirsten's where this is an issue but can see the possibility elsewhere - if u only add a color and do not change the default to balnk anyone vieweng ur creations on the Kirsten at least, will see white background with green and black circles (handy while building, but ugly when done). You might say, "why should I care? They should be on an SL Viewer"- perhaps, but you do lose some customers that way. I ran Kirstens for over a year and only recently changed - I past up many an item because the builder never changed the default to blank and the item was not mod.

FYI

The default isn't in the vewer, it's in the sim. Go to OpenSim, you get a different plywood texture. If Kirsten's viewer is showing a different default texture, that means it's specifically intercepting the UUID for the main grid default texture and replacing it.

That hack won't work for every grid, only for grids with a default texture that has the same UUID. It's a cool idea, but impractical.

Even assuming that Kirsten's viewer does act as described, there is merit in the "They should be using the real SL viewer" argument, for the same reason why there is a body called the W3C defining standards for HTML. It's to eliminate the need to waste a lot of time coding things to work with multiple competing "standards" that cause web browsers or SL clients to treat the same information in a different manner. SL has defined the standard. All prims are plywood unless the builder specifies otherwise. For any client's author to decide otherwise means that they're the ones causing a business to "lose a few customers", not the business owner themselves.

Regardless of the cause- it seems to me it won't hurt me any to use the blank if i hope to please as many people as possible with merchandise. Anyhoo- just FYI.

I always thought the prims were being pulled out of the ground when we created something by clicking on the ground hehe

(funny though, when I first started that was the impression I got)

They come from the prim fairies.

They come from the prim wells. The main prim well is in ANWR, and the Coonspiracy operates a secondary prim well in Tigger, as well as providing supplemental grid power from our power plant in Noonkkot.

/me believes there might be one in Hanley, too... (and maybe in Bay City?)

there was a suggestion that prims *should* come from mones. Then, noobs would become prospectors and search for prims finds, stake out a claim, mine them, and sell them in prim markets to builders.

This would give noobs, and people who simply like the prospecting life, a fine source of income and therefore prevent camping, bots, griefers, and fix all lag.

Too bad.

Why not? It takes a beautiful stain, and it's seamless for random dimmer animations, and it's in everyone's cache.

The ANWR pipeline is blocked. We will run out of safe clean prims if we do not get help. Vote for MISC-2781 before it is too late!

It's that damned Grid Warming! The SL Caps are melting - how much carbon credits does an Av consume and is it dependant on bling usage?? Can someone get Al Gore in on this- we need help, people!
