Saw somebody last night at my club that was over 6000 with the ARC stuff. She was wearing (not using - just wearing as part of an outfit) a bunch of guns and such. Taking a peek at a couple of them, I saw that some were 250 prims and had _dozens_ of big textures. One had at least five or six 1024x512s and another dozen 512x512s plus a bunch of smaller ones. For one gun. Also seen a few other people that were over 10k  and, just IMO, didn't even look very good. :(

Got me wondering if the ARC stuff is going to encourage vendors to look more closely at the impact of what they do and start publishing rendering costs. Hair, tails, guns, shoes, whatever..

Personally, I wouldn't mind seeing this.. Anybody else? For consumers, is this something you'd pay attention to or appreciate if vendors did?

I would VERY much appreciate if creators included that info on the sign, box or whatever they offer to buy from.

It will matter to me in future purchases for sure. I have three hairs from one very popular hair maker that add an average of 1200 to my ARC score. I see hair just as nice that offer lower counts.

I would love to see ARC posted as part of a products stats. I'm even hoping that this feature gets extended to every single in-world item. It just might trigger a wave of demand for more efficiently constructed items.

If nothing else it should help raise awareness of the fact that most of what people refer to as 'lag' (graphics rendering performance) is actually caused by large textures and inefficient content.

well turn your camera and see how that arc score changes.

If they had a working system then it might be a good thing, but right now it seems to vary a good bit on random factors.

I've actually seen someone wearing the same outfit port out and port right back and get a totally different score.

Yeah we need it readble by scripts so we can set security orbs automatically to eject anyone not in the green :)
Hmm probably wouldn't hurt to have them on items, I gguess it will come in voulantariily as people ask for it or people want an edge on their competitors, but trouble is there could be more lag caused by everyone walking around with ARC on poking into other avatars business than that caused by the smaller percentage of people with high figures :)

The ARC is calculated client-side based on the information already used to render the scene, so it does not cause any lag. It may slow down your own machine by the tiny, tiny fraction it takes to add the numbers together and show it on the screen (which is ridiculously small compared to the work of the actual rendering), but it has no impact whatsoever on the sim or anybody else.

Vendors publishing ARC numbers? 90% of them don't even post PRIM numbers! I think they should. I spent so many Lindens in my early days on things I thought were the awesomest-looking things in the universe, only to find out that they used up half my house's allotted prims, so I couldn't use them - and I couldn't return them either. You see a lot of signs and notecards saying "sorry, but because the items are No Transfer, unfortunately I can't give refunds". I think a lot of people make their items no-trans precisely so they can use that excuse not to ever refund dissatisfied customers.

Publishing ARC numbers is a commercial decision. If it adds value to a product and makes it more appealing, people will do it - but it has to be the vendor's choice.

Heh... I can picture that working as well as an Age Verified parcel. (^_^)

SRSLY... Have you seen avatars in the green? It's pretty lame. If green is the goal, well, welcome to There.com and enjoy your low lag nothingness. If anything, I think the colors should change by the thousands. Green>>Yellow For 2000.... Yellow>>Red For 5000. (=_=)

I'm usually in the high 600s with one special hair that pusher me over 2200. Nobody notices the difference. The most reactions I ever get are "WOW Nice hair!" Which is the main reason I bought it. It really is nice. Should it count against me socially if I want to look good sometimes? Is flash and flair going to be considered an ejectable offense? (=_=)y

Shameless plug here:

My business partner Xi Taurog is publishing ARC numbers on the new shoe line she's rolling out - all of them score under 100, and the individual counts are in the description on the vendor box. She says she's going to go back and do the numbers on stuff she's already made, and put ARC numbers on everything wearable she makes from now on.

I think it's a good idea - an informed consumer is generally a happy consumer.

Should it count against you socially if your desire to look good slows everybody near you to a crawl? Most certainly. That is a huge social impact on others.
Does it balance against the value of looking good, which (as you also mention), people presumably enjoy? That's a matter of both opinion and common sense in the situation.
The ARC is just one tool to help you balance those factors.
-And you're not going to pry my flexi, transparent hair and tail from me, yellow numbers be damned!!

I hope designers do post the numbers as a consumer should always be given as much information about a product as possible (as Dakota mentioned, I wish all creators would post prim count with all items because you cannot always figure it out yourself depending on how the item is sold).

I will take the ARC into account when buying something, but just like price, it will not be the ruling factor, but one of many in my decision to purchase something.

Nobody should really be using ARC to restrict access to their areas until the RC is the main viewer and not only used by the majority but the ARC option being known to the masses. I am currently only using the RC very little and usually only to check out specific things, so 99% of the time I have no clue what my ARC is or anyone's around me.

The only problem is that 99 per cent of consumers will not know what ARC is, so you'd need to publish a guide as well. Good idea though, and the people that do know might well appreciate the extra info.

I do have a notecard with the info about ARC inside the package

those who are not aware will not care about it having an arc on the package :)
