Hello, I'm new to Second Life and I want to do a little art project. I'm planning to create a prim, then write a short story about said prim on another bulletin post. I'll then invite people (any one can join in) to add on to the project by attaching another prim(s) to my original prim or adding to the story in any which way they want, or both. What I want to know is,
A.)How do you create a prim that points to a url address (i.e. create a prim that when you click it, it'll take you to the thread that contains the short story).

B.) Is it possible to create a prim that other people can add to, and then save that new object to your own inventory?

C.)Lastly, is there a piece of land specifically dedicated to art projects?

Thanks and sorry if some of these questions are total noobish things to ask. I created a SL account specifically to do this art project.

you may want to start a new group, and deed the object to group. then create a role in the group allowing members sufficient rights to modify the group-owned object.

i dont know of a piece of land dedicated to artistic endeavours, but i am sure one would exist somewhere.

to open a browser window to a predetermined url when clicked, paste this code into a new script, then place the script in the objects inventory:
CODE
//replace the URL immediately below with your own.

string Url = "http://someurl.com/page.php?";

default {

on_rez(integer start_param) {

llResetScript();

}

touch_start(integer total_number) {

llLoadURL(llDetectedKey(0), "Click to go to url", Url);

}

dataserver(key queryid, string data) {

Url = "https://www..com" + llEscapeURL(data);

}

}

hi mr, welcome to SL! There's a thriving art scene here - it's what got me hooked on SL in the first place. If you're after land for an art project you might try Odyssey, Caerleon or NMC. Search for them in places and groups.

Your project sounds really interesting. Another way of approaching it would be to write the stories on notecards and drop the notecards into the prims. Scripts can read notecards, so you could make the prims tell their own stories (just brainstorming :) ).

I love this idea :D

Mind there will be some that cannot help themselves and will try to grief your project. But overall it seems like a community construct- loving it! Mr.- go check the Undying Thread for just such a theme.. somethng that grew out of nothing.

And welcome to SL :D

You could shape the prims into flat panels and apply images, possibly with text, as textures as well as dropping scripts into them. I think people looking at the work would need to be able to follow what it is and what it means fairly easily.

You could actually put the short story directly onto the one surface of the prim as a texture. For instance, if you so wish, you can apply a separate texture to each face of a cube - 6 in all, although you'd probably not need to do that. You could type the story in the Paint! programme or similar, save it as a jpeg and upload it to SL for L$10.

Vlad Bjornson did something similar to this, with group art building projects that was quite cool. He had set themes for the day and invited folks to his island for the building. I never was able to actually attend any of the sessions but did see some of the stuff that was created which was cool. He started a group called "Collabricate" for this particular purpose but I'm not sure if they've done anything recently so you could perhaps join the group http://world.secondlife.com/group/b77b9a3f-2600-121a-753c-3095d31b5827 and ask or check out some these links:

Awesome! Thanks so much for the advice. I'll try to see if there are any other people doing similar projects and maybe I can get their help.

Brooklyn is Watching - http://slurl.com/secondlife/Popcha/66/141/40 is a sim devoted to the arts where anyone can leave their work on display with a one-week auto return, and I'm sure the artists who frequent there would be happy to participate in such a project.

you can also check out their blog at www.brooklyniswatching.com

I think I'll post the story in this same bulletin since I don't want to post repeats. I'll continually add to the project for about a week and see where it gets me.

Adventure Begins

Note: Here begins the story.

A friend once told Mr. Prim "God chooses your dump stat. So if you got a problem with how your life is going, blame Him." Prim thought about this for a very long time. He was sure there was more to life's problems then that. He was sure that he could change himself, for the better. He looked at the others of his kind, and saw them, with their many colors, shapes and sizes, and he wanted the be like them, he wanted to be colorful and dark at the same time, he wanted to be part of the greater good, yet he also didn't want to be another brick in the god damned wall. He wanted more. Hell, he wanted everything. Prim, like all others of his kind, was infused with the entire knowledge of his creator. He knew that eventually, he'd change or be forgotten. And he sure as shit didn't want to be forgotten. But all he could do for now, was wait.

I can't answer but I'd come see this.

Kind of like "exquisite corpse" game of the Dadaists.

I'll be damned, I've never heard of this exquisite corpse but that's exactly what I was going for. I hang out here: http://slurl.com/secondlife/Viciae/245/75/58 You can joing the "ICAM new media lounge" group to mess around with my prims (at least I think you can mess around with them, not sure).

It sounds like a cool project. Let us know where you set it up eventually. :)
