Hubby is trying to run it on his laptop, and it used to run on his laptop, now he gets an error that it can not run, to update his drivers, which he has already done

I tried live help, they said they do not support mobile video cards (in other words they do not help with laptop issues)

his card is the intel 945 mobile express chipset

It prolly wont run on that laptop with an intel graphics card..
Ive tried several laptops and could only get it to work with GEFORCE and some ATI graphic cards.

I manage it on a Compaq laptop with an nVidia, shared memory, graphics system in it, and Vista.

..laptop gfx cards

A friend of mine has a newish (w/in the last 2 years) laptop with an integrated gfx card and SL works just fine on it, even at High preferences (Ultra makes lag too unbearable), and it's a Vista machine.

If it's an older model laptop, yeah it might not run...not sure on integrated gfx cards, my 5 yr old laptop (Xp home) will run SL on medium with an ATI mobility card, but almost barely.

So your hubby might just need to get a desktop *grins*.

PS. Before he goes into SL, maybe check preferences for the client and disable all high-end gfx, like shaders and water and shiny and see if that will let him in.

There's also generally a few versions of SL in the downloads area. Maybe try a different version. But if he updated his video card perhaps it was the wrong driver set. I would uninstall it and reinstall the video card for sure. I can bearably run SL on my laptop, it's a few years old. It is also an HP specifically designed to be one of the 1st HD laptops, so I am sure it has some sort of onboard graphics of some sort. But it's slow, it is stable but takes eons to rez anything.

*EDIT For that matter there's also open source cloned clients as well. Nicholaz and a few others. I am sure you can find the info in the forums. I hear that some are 'lighter' versions, designed to run without all the fancy features of the current client. He may have luck running one of those.

his laptop is about a year old, and in case no one noticed, it DID run SL until now

so this is not a "oh I just tried and it will not work" it is a "this used to work, now it will not"

yes he updated the drivers, been trying to find the disks that came with the laptop to try to reinstall stuff, but even those seem to be lost (things seem to vanish in this house)

he has a PC, however at the moment, out of commission

maybe one of the 3rd party clients will work, no harm trying

thanks anyway folks

It makes a difference where the updated drivers came from. Was it updated via Windows Update or at the manufacturer's site?

Reporting the exact, complete, precise driver version and source might enable someone to recognize a problem with a particular driver.

It is possible, in general, to revert drivers to a previous version. Might try that.

It's conceivable that a system restore to a time when it was working might work.

Sigh...

I once had similar problems - on one of my desktops (a multiple monitor rig) - things were running ok for months, then all of a sudden SL decided that my hardware wasn't acceptable. I finally tracked down the problem to a hardware/software combo glitch - for some reason (power failure? act of gnomes? I don't know :) ) my drivers had become FUBAR'd and the PC had silently regressed to the primary graphics card to standard VGA mode (the generic fallback for the driverset).

So, what had been running fine before suddenly showed SL a face that when running SL resulted in "You're not supported, upgrade your drivers". Once I straightened out the problem (uninstalled all graphics drivers completely, then reinstalled, ensuring that the monitor on which SL was trying to display had in fact the right drivers assigned), things began working again.

I hope this helps... or at least sheds some light.

Good luck! :)

Maybe also try Nicholaz's "old school" version, which dates to before Windlight was introduced?

Although Windlight ran faster and better on my old laptop actually...

I thought there was sticky about someone using laptops on top of threads...
but I may be mistaken sleepy right now.
I don't have one but trying to help a friend use laptop to build and I can't explain how he can do certain things with his mouse.
Anyone know where I can direct him for that information?

Rha, I run mine on a laptop, an Acer with Windows XP. I downloaded whatever version of SL is the plain old version you get when you just ask for it lol. Don't ask about cards or whatever, it's got a crappy video card that was voted "the worst" one in the room, while I was in the Hangout by everyone there haha!

It runs perfectly fine. I do have some issues occassionally but I think it's more my internet connection, not the computer. I can even get my graphic preferences up pretty high, although it does get rather laggy when I do it.

Just adding to the conversation to let you know it absolutely can be done :)

I also have an acer with xp and it runs fine on my own laptop

yep I know it can be done, he was able to use it previously on his laptop, then something changed, not sure what, and he can no longer run SL on the laptop...

*shrug*
