Want mapping program for coordinates on a grid

Hi all,

I am spatially challenged. I have a little gizmo I run that gives me all the numbers for plot boundaries, borders, and corners. Problem is, it's just a bunch of numbers to me. I know what they mean, but when I go to actually transfer the info to a piece of graph paper, my mind blanks out. I know about x,y and all that, but somehow my brain doesn't process it well, and I'm left looking at all these numbers, wondering which is x, which is y, which direction is it that runs from 0 to 256, etc.

With a lot of patience and grumbling (and time), I can eventually figure it out. But it's really a nightmare if my land is not a perfect square or rectangle!

So, the long and short of it is this - is there a program that would allow me to enter all my coordinate data, and generate a grid map for me, so I can find the center of the plot, etc to aid as a building tool? It's driving me crazy to do it the way I am. And please don't say CAD, because I'm really afraid of that! Just a simple little grid map generator is all I need.

Thanks!

X is to the Right (across), and Y is UP, with the origin (0,0) at the SW corner.

I love "view property lines" I often leave them on just out of curiosity when I'm exploring.

Thanks for the reminder!

Thanks, Snowman. It sounds really simple, when you state it like that. I'm going to make myself a template with this stuff written right on it, so I don't keep forgetting, wondering, and walking the plot lines to try to figure out if they are getting bigger or smaller!

Thanks!

I use a gadget named Advanced Border & Performance-Scanner
- by Thomas Conover

One of the things it does is to build a 10m wall along the boundaries of a plot - at whatever altitude you happen to be. I can bui;d for irregular-shaped plots. Alternatively it can mark the corners with sticks. The wall can be deleted with a single click.
It's invaluable for building above 'ground' when you can't see the View / Property Lines beside the prims . There's absolutely no danger of having stray bits of prims encroaching over neighbours' land.

If you want the x's and y' of the different boundaries, just 'Edit' an appropriate wall section and read the coordinates from the Object tab

Possibly you might benefit from having the axes displayed.

Client / Rendering / Axes

If you still have your mini-map set in the rotating mode you might want to set it to not rotate.

Preferences / General / Rotate Mini-Map (uncheck it)

I already knew about the nonrotating mini-map, which I much prefer.

But I did NOT know about the axes display option!!! This is so great. Thank you for telling me about it. I don't know how I overlooked it; I use that menu often enough for other things.

Thanks!

PS - I am still in search of software or something that will allow me to enter coordinates and map it out on graph paper grid.

I checked this out in world, and SL has it the opposite. I am standing facing north. I turned on the axes from the client menu. They show x going south to north (up) in red, and y going west to east (across) in green.

Now I am totally confused.

I don't see that, Princess. Are you sure you're facing north?

What a way to make myself look like a total idiot in front of the entire forum.
I was facing east.

/me hides her head in shame, and wonders how she could have made such a stupid mistake.

Thank you for nudging me to take a second look, Cristalle. I should have looked at that mini-map a little closer the first time. I WANTED it to be north I was facing - it FELT north to me!

How long is is going to take me to live this one down, you guys? :)

It's consistent, but not sure how to explain it. If you draw a graph on a sheet of paper, someplace would be 0,0, and x would get larger to the right (east), and y would get larger going up (north), and that's how the coordinates in the sim work, too: that grid, overlaid on a map, with that 0,0 point at the southwest corner. (Or, another way of saying it: the sim is the first quadrant of that graph: the part where both x and y are positive.) Absolutely no idea if that helps.

You can get compasses that show which direction you are facing. I used on a lot when I flew more.

Not a bad idea. I thought I was ok with just the mini-map (set to not rotate), but I need to actually LOOK at the stupid thing!
