The FTC report on virtual worlds is in. (http://www.ftc.gov/opa/2009/12/virtualworlds.shtm)
Any bets on how Linden Labs will react?

Having skimmed the report, we came off as better than most virtual worlds. That will not stop some congresscritter from pounding a desk and demanding more protection "for the children".

The hilarious part is that sexually and violently explicit content is EVERYWHERE on mainstream television. Even the 6pm news. Bunch of flaming hypocrites.

Ain't that the truth. I'd rather let my kid watch Cartoon Network than the 6pm news. I know there will be a lot less violence and other mind numbing stuff.

I doubt that this report will cause many sleepless nights at LL. Not only is the explicit focus of the report (upon access by minors to "adult" materials) very limited in scope, but LL has also anticipated this well in advance with the AC changes, verification, and the move to Zindra. LL's moves won't stop campaigns of misinformation about SL in the media, or in the chambers of power, but it will effectively blunt any real assaults on SL.

I think, despite its evident limitations, that the report is worthwhile. How much MORE interesting would be a survey of the KINDS and definitions of "adult content" in virtual worlds, though.

There is one section of the report that says LL was in the process of the Zindra move, and in another place, they mention that in spite of everything that's been done, adult content was still easy to find.

Just reading group titles in people's profiles will give 'the youngsters' quite an education.
