Has anyone heard *why* shadows/spotlights/etc. are not available on the Macintosh platform? Is it a hardware issue (my iMac's graphic card is in the "blessed" list), a "we don't have anyone who wants to do it" issue, or some other something standing in the way?
Genuinely curious.
Mari (No, this is not the time for a 1996-style platform war)

I may be wrong about this, but improved rendering thingies in SL on Macs has always seemed to come in late after it's been here for PCs, I guess the improved rendering tech guy knows how to set up the improved rendering thingies for PCs quite well, but has to sit down and read a big book to get it to work for Macs? LOL

Hyang just built a S17 viewer from KLee for Mac. Not sure if this works with shadows but I suggest you give it a try http://hyangreflections.blogspot.com

I thought they were using some nVidia-specific extensions. OS X has an integrated OpenGL, you don't normally talk directly to the GPU at all. This means you get a much more uniform experience... even if the hardware has no OpenGL support at all you can't see a difference other than performance, and things like transparent windows worked even on my old Powermac 7600 with no graphics acceleration. It does, however, seem to mean that you have to do special magic to use extensions that Apple hasn't integrated yet.

I'd guess it has something with the Mac OS not supporting deferred rendering since that's the part that chokes.

From: Milla Janick I'd guess it has something with the Mac OS not supporting deferred rendering since that's the part that chokes. That doesn't sound like a good thing.
