Quirky Chat

I have encountered a somewhat frustrating quirk with chat recently. I did not see anyone else mention this in the forums, so I presume it is not common. This is best described by an example. If I type the following in chat:

One
Two
Three
Four

What I see on the screen comes out something like this:

You: One
You: Three
You: Four
You: Two

About half of what I type is delayed for ten seconds or longer, the rest goes through right away. It appears, the person listening to me is seeing it correctly, most of the time. Naturally, this results in some rather disjointed conversations. I am running the most recent version of sl and recently reinstalled it. Any thoughts on a solution would be appreciated.

Chat lag, Aragorn -happens from time to time.

It's a pain for sure, especially if you are engaging in some sort of Moroccan bazaar type haggling with someone and to your horror, find you actually raised your offer at the end :)

I see it a lot in Group IM - not as much in local chat, but it does happen. Just another SL regular event.

This only started with the most recent version of sl. Perhaps reinstalling the prior version would provide a solution.

It's probably got more to do with blips in your connection than the SL version. This has been an intermittent issue for as long as I've been in SL, regardless of the client used. I would save yourself the hassle of uninstalling/reinstalling if I were you.

Agreed; and it's not just blips in your connection but blips in every connection in the internet between your computer and SL's servers and back to your computer. Your chat gets sent in packets and if one of packets making up that "Two" in your second line of text gets corrupted or lost anywhere while traversing the ether between you and SL, it could cause that second line of chat to be delayed for a few seconds even while lines you typed after it sail through without a hitch.

It happens; it happens quite frequently to those of us with less robust internet connections, and if it's never happened to you so far, count yourself lucky. It's very unlikely to have anything to do with the viewer, though.

I hate it even more when it happens in IM :(.

'One' and 'Four' make it through but 'Two' and 'Three' are silently sent as offlines which you won't see until you relog hours later (or the next day).

(On-topic: chat lag can be either due to a problem on the sim, or it can be en route too. If your ping - in View / Statistics Bar - is normal and packet loss is at 0 then it's sim side, otherwise it could be an issue on your end. Or you could just ask if others around you are seeing it too :))
