to code vehicle scripts so the vehicle is returned to the owner once the avatar isn't seated anymore? I see so many abandoned vehicles while exploring it just made me wonder.

Perhaps just making the vehicle temp will do the trick. Temp objects usually disappear after 60 seconds or so, but if an avatar sits on them stay rezzed as long the avatar is seated.

Those are usually temp-on-rez.

I'm sure it's possible. But don't ask me how because I don't know. However, I'll bet that if you ask in Scripting Tips, someone over there would be able to give you much more complete answer. That's why that forum is there, after all.

The jet skis that come out of my jet ski vendor do this. If somebody loses one, it comes back to my Lost and Found folder.

I read of some hang gliders doing this as well.

Many vehicles are not abandoned. They are lost. I remember logging on in my condo apartment once and finding a red car in my living room. Sometimes Second Life causes vehicles to jump to odd locations.

Many lost vehicles are due all kinds of happenstance(hitting sim/void borders, zooming off while trying to position it by editing, etc). I just send an IM to the listed owner with the sim name and co-ordinates. And weird stuff just goes on some days as we all have experienced, lol.
