I'm seriouslly interested in buying a either an island or a region.
I've a few questions
Is the difference between a private island and a manland region just the fact that other people's regions join with yours?
Do you have the same tools to control your sim as you do with an island as with a mainland region?
Is there more lag with having a region rather than a private island?
Other than the 'privacy' of an island, what's the advantages of an island over owning a mainland region?
Why are islands more expensive than mainland regions?
I know there are different classes of servers for these, can I specify a class, and pay more for it, or how does that work?
Thanks in advance

The main differences between private islands and mainland regions are that you have much more control on a private island. There is lots of info in the knoweledge base that covers the differences. In summary though - once you sell off a little piece of a mainland region, it's sold forever (unless you buy it back) but on a private island you always control the whole island and you can always reclaim (take back) land that you have 'sold'. On a private island you can control all kinds of settings, you have full control over the terrain and about 20 other aspects of the island.
With mainland you have no region-wide controls you just own a really big parcel of mainland. Although you do get access to concierge-level support as you'd be paying more than $125/month in tier.
Lag is relative and I doubt you'll get a consensus as to what has more or less. Too many variables.
The main advantages of private islands vs. mainland are all the controls you have over the island.
Monthly island fees are more expensive than a full mainland region tier because of the extra control you get.
And finally, every new region is on a class 5 server, regardless if it is mainland or private island. There is no option there. If you want a slower system you could try and buy a second-hand island that's on a class 4 server, or try and find a whole mainland sim for sale that's on a class 4 server, but if you're buying new from SL you'll get the class 5.
