I've just located what I assume is a spybot, item is called Detector 2.1v on my land, dropped by a person known to me but not a friend. How do I effectively handle this situation now? Will anything happen to this person if I AR them, and if so, what do I need to give the Lindens to make it more effective?
Thanks in advance for any assistance given.

More effective than what? Return the item and change the settings on your land so that other people can't leave things lying around.

Thanks in advance for any assistance given. Right click > Return object. Then in the land menu, off-tick the creation box for all options. AR if you don't care about your relationship with this person (before #1 above.) If you *do* care about the relationship, I'd send an IM telling them you found something of theirs on your land and you've returned it so it wouldn't get "lost". Then ask them what it does, you know, out of curiosity. A

First thing I'd do in that situation is to return it to them. They'll know you've found it and are aware of it. That might be enough to stop them from doing it again. If it comes back, well then I would definitely consider an AR.
The person concerned clearly has build abilities on your land. Remove that ability. Make sure your land is no-build (or auto-return is set to one minute) apart from group members (and remove the person from the land group). If you rent from another land group and don't have group edit powers, have a word with your landlord and express your concerns. They may have encountered this sort of thing before.
Other people wiser than I will be along shortly (indeed, have probably beaten me to it while I type) with other suggestions.

Thanks for the help, this person and I have bad history so I really don't care about ruining the relationship.. lol
As a show of good faith I had allowed them access to my land briefly today which had build restrictions lifted due to work being done on the land. Guess it goes to show, once a cad, always a cad.
Thanks for all the quick responses, have returned item with a "nice" message and placed the person in question back on the banned listing.

How serious an offense it is depends on what the Detector does. Who makes it? Maybe we can help you figure out what it does.
If it is a chat logger that is a serious offense and should be AR'd to LL. If it is a simple visitor list maker or log in detector, that is not a TOS violation, even thought it may be a violation of your trust. I would ask the Owner what he thinks he is doing. It would be amusing to watch them squirm and explain themselves.

Found it listed on slexchange .. with the following ... SENDS YOU AN IM WHEN SOMEONE IS ON YOUR LAND AND ALSO SENDS YOU WHAT THERE SAYING IF THEY ARE IN a 10m RANGE !!! This is good for business owners and land sellers who's sales are more 1 on 1 . The reason for full color is so it can be easily spotted for those who use it to spy. Interestingly .. the one on my land was rezzed tiny, transparent and hidden .. so wasn't easily spotted and obviously meant to spy. Have filed an AR, maybe it will be dealt with by the lindens, maybe not. Also rebanned said person, returned item and asked them what they really thought they would achieve and are they proud of themselves. Hate SL drama, so dealt with in my opinon ... I know what it does so curiosity now satisfied )

Oh you guys are no fun. Get together, have a party and say all sorts of total nonsense within range of it, whilst maintaining a serious tone. "Hey I just got this *awesome* stock tip..."

Damn: too late. There was just so much to tell that Detector 2.1v... and so much hot cybering with (an object named the same as) its owner's partner.

Yeah that would have been cool, I would have started cut and pasting random dialogue from the internet into chat around it maybe chat karoke, and generall used it to spam the crap out of them.

PB - what made you think to look for it, and how did you find it, and how did you realize whose it was?

Side question. Assuming I have the concept right... is there a way for me to tell if someone's remotely stuck a chatspy thing on my avatar, a la blowgun? Or, failing that, if they're using a remote-cam chat spy thing on me, say, from across the sim? Or the sim next door? (/me lives in IM anyway...) Just wondering.
/me holds mike to chatspy: ... "So THEN, Desmond says to Qie, 'Dude! ZOMG! I just saw (owner of Detector 2.1) giving, like a whole LOT of pretty flowers with spy chocolate things to, like, uh, this REALLY cute stockbroker/fae/dragon/vampire/furry/tiny/avatar lady with, totally like HUGE... plots of land...!'" "And QIE said, "Dude! That was no stockbroker! That was my dermatologist/escort/plumber/Gorean carpet installer!!"
And they wonder why I stick to flowers.

For them to have the spy attached to your AV, it would have to be in a prim you are wearing: shoes, jewelry, hair, a skirt, etc. So if the person you think is spying on you has given you a wearable prim, discard it. The script in the prim could be named anything. There might be follower units, but I don't think they can tp with you. Isn't the cam chat spy thing only for voice chat?

Right: For something to relay your chat, it has to stay within chat distance of you, so an attachment is best for that because it can follow you across teleports to distant sims. A follower object is much more limited although it may be able to find you on a neighboring sim. In the OP's case, though, it was just a stationary rezzed object... possibly turned up in About Land as belonging to the perpetrator.
So, one might well be suspicious of scripted attachments given by others, and of any scripted objects rezzed near areas where "privacy" is a concern. Unfortunately, there's no way to tell what a script is actually doing--there's no "bug-sweeper" that can find only spy scripts--so it's helpful in this case that the object had an incriminating name.
Remote cams are a whole different thing. Without a script, one can pull one's cam around across a sim or two, but eventually one gets beyond the draw distance for even huge objects and there's just nothing to see. This is also a limitation for collaborative cam scripts such as the one I make; they really only work reliably when the sender and receiver are within draw distance of each other.
