Ok...i've brought my sraw distance to 64 (Normally 200 or so). I've upped (and downed once too to test) the bandwidth and cache limits. I've cleared my cache. I've turned off voice, parcel music & video. I've power-cycled my router.
I'm still lagging so bad that when i try to move/talk it takes about a minute to respond.
My web browsers are all working as fast as normal, the people i'm around in SL are the same as usual..what's going on?
Anyone know anything else I can try?

From: Urah Pahute No Idea I'm in a similar situation. Just last night and today. Its like someone flicked a switch - and I know it wasnt me! What mainly bothers me is that everything else is working at normal speed, SL Forums load fine, even Gmail which usually takes a little bit is fast! Maybe SL just has a grudge against me...

Yup, just SL here too. Actually it started happening since I started getting errors on this site. And errors in SL. I couldnt even post a thread earlier, yet everything else on the interweb was working fine. But since I havent read any real "problem" posts about SL's behaviour, I thought it was "just one of those things".

Aside from any possible problem on SL's end...
I've heard that even if people get good results from ISP "speed tests", persistent high-bandwidth connections (straight downloads, streaming bulk stuff like SL) will often burst for 10-20 seconds and then throttle back below usable levels. This wouldn't show up in web browsing, because it applies separately to each independent file fetch.
I want a network guy to come in here and stomp all over my face with the perfect right answer. Really I do.

Do a speed test and a ping test. Your broadband speed does not have to be that fast to quickly load most websites so comparing website performance to SL performance is not necessarily conclusive. Likewise if you are suffering ping loss outside of SL with other websites it could be a problem with your ISP. That has generally been my problem with lag in SL (greedy greedy ISP oversubscribing and overloading nodes).

A few more things you might try...
1. Lower your particle count
2. Turn off all settings that you could possibly do without...eg...foot shadows etc
3. In settings, play around with the 'show avatar names' settings...I have mine completely turned off, just one less thing to process I guess.
4. Use 'sun and moon' only
5. Whatever your graphics card memory is set to, try to set it lower...eg... if it's 64K use the 32K setting....for some reason that seems to help things....and a Linden told me that one..
As for pings etc.....actually have no idea what they are, but I figure, if it ain't broke, don't go fixing it...lol
Hope this helps ...

Im not sure if its still there but if any could explain if still there the trace route thing on the support page I'd be interested to understand it better I never got it to show though I may not have waited long enough IDK thought I gave it time enough but no results ever showed.

Go into Client, Rendering, Types and turn off anything you don't need to see - such as alpha, clouds, trees, grass... rendering as few pixels as possible will speed things up a bit. Bit sad though - don't render any pixels and your performance will be ok - lol.

*sighs* Long gone are those halcyon days when I could run SL with the graphic prefs maxed out. I think it was about two weeks ago Seriously though, is anyone else of the opinion that the viewer is rapidly outpacing people's computers? For hard core MMO players I guess it's not so much of an issue as they tend to be constantly upgrading to the latest graphics cards etc. But SL attracts a broader/different user base than that imho. Are they going to upgrade themselves out of the market?

Snark's comment about ISP's throttling speed is very pertinent, sems to be more common among the service 'resellers', beware the cheap deal, very high contention and throttling may well be the reason that it's cheap. One more thing, RAM. I had problems untilI upped the RAM to 2gb (windows XP) I would freeze constantly in high texture areas. The sl client is very greedy on RAM (a bit better since they fixed some 'leaks'. Check and see what else is eatimg RAM on your machine and if you don't need it. stop it. Remember too that Vista really eats it up before you even run an application.
