I have been traveling more now and need to get a laptop that will run SL well. Seems every hotel has connection issues but I would appreciate anyones' suggestion who has bought a new laptop recently and uses it when traveling. Thanks.

Most important thing is to get one with separate graphics chip/memory and not integrated video. Otherwise SL will run very slowly.

Also remember that SL doesn't like WiFi, and most hotels have WiFi connections. It will work, but not without complaint.

I travel a lot - my Dell XPS1730 - heavy to lug - but works well.

SL has run fine for me, consistently, on WiFi for the past 3 years or so, both at home and hotels.

The viewer also helps... I've got the Meerkat viewer on my travel laptop and you can wack down the draw distance to whatever you want (8m for IMing etc) with a single chat command.. great when the pc and/or connection is not great.

You will have a very hard time to find a "new" laptop that cannot run SL pretty well.

I recently bought this one:

http://www.google.com/products/catalog?q=asus+n80vn&cid=3689341961447847234&sa=title#p

used it when traveling recently to SLCC and a few other places. Runs SL like a dream, even with hotel WiFi SL runs fairly well if you keep your draw distance down. I had a couple of connection issues at hotels but found that resetting the IP address of the wireless adapter fixed the issue.

As others said, make sure you buy a laptop with a full graphics card - no "onboard" graphics.

Well, who knows. The system requirements on the website recommend cable or DSL; I always figured that my crashing had something to do with the WiFi, because of that.

The system requirements also say that satellite is not supported, but I have used it for 3 years just fine, aside from a very high ping time, which slows down my reaction times.

The sys requirements are a bit outdated. When they were first written, satellite broadband and wireless were restricted to speeds that *did* make it hard to run SL, but they have improved quite a bit in the last few years.

What you really need is speeds in the 500kb/s range or higher, and to not have connection dropouts that make the server think you crashed or logged out intentionally. The *type* of connection is not relevant if it meets those requirements.

Uhmm.... :)

Wi-Fi is actually just a name for products or devices based on IEEE 802.11 standards. If you have problems with wireless connections its mostly a questions of the devices (hardware) and the right usage of it. Many devises aren't certificated (matter of IEEE 802.11 certification costs) and can be "incompatible" with others.
