You need to make sense of how the UV map is wrapped around the avatar... To start get the templates ... http://goodies.onrez.com/shop/chipmidnight/ (^_^)

Then... To help make sense of light and shadow and the placement of most common "bits" you'd want to have some skin textures for reference... Get that stuff here... http://eloheliot.blogspot.com/ (^_^)

And, seek out inworld clothing classes and tutorials. Most are free and I attended a GREAT one over in Livingtree the other day Robin Sojourner. (^_^)y

Well... That's a start. Truly, at first, try wearing grid textures as a skin so you can see the alignment/misalignment, shrink/stretch issues that exist on the avatar mesh. Plus, pay close attention to the alignment lines on the templates. (^_^)

Sizes, positions, scales and such to move cleanly pixel to pixel once worn. So... Looking at the danger areas and seeing how the templates "fit" first will help you in regards to alignment and such as you continue your work. (^_^)y

She was busy last week too.

An even though I make no secret that she is a close RL/SL friend of mine, I do hafta say: I found this class to be very informative and learned a lot from it. An I've been here f'r a bit. :-)

Aww!

After this run ends (end of November), I know she plans to pack up the materials and put them into some sort of book form. She also had some materials that might help now on http://www.robinwood.com/Catalog/Technical/SL-Tuts/SLTutSet.html as well as having the texture tutorial in Livingtree. Both may be useful for you.

Even if you can't make it to a live class, Robin has a self-paced texture tutorial in Livingtree that is second to none. I can't say enough good things about it, and she has landmark givers there for the Ivory Tower of Primitives (building tutorial, self-paced) and the Particle Lab (how to script for using particles, self-paced).
