That would be great if they could overcome the lag problem. Maybe have a special viewer that already had standard textures and assets downloaded on board to eliminate that bandwidth hog.

NASA has a really great set of sims in SL, including simulations of off an off world planet or two.

Wow.....how cool. I see it happening eventually..... and lets face it....this is the ultimate intent for a virtual world. To keep people connected.

Seriously.... how awesome is that.... we don't wait for weeks for a written letter that may never come...technology has taken us so far beyond that it's amazing. I'm trying to get my own family on board in SL because we're so far apart. My brother's a musician and he's looking at playing live in SL..... but the coolest thing about it is that as a family we can spend more quality time together in a virtual way. It's cheaper than a plane ticket....and more interesting and stimulating that a phone call.

If my fiance had the bandwidth in Iraq to get in SL.....he would.....he's not in to the idea of SL at all..... in fact he loathes that I play LOL But.....given our situation, even HE admits it would cool to be able to hang out with me and goof off in SL. Isolation sucks....and what an awesome thing that we are on the verge of solving that dilemma for astronauts.

"Mision Control, my helmet is now up my ass..., the Mars buggy is jumping all over the place and every 256m it suddenly stops and kicks me off. Can we come home now? Or can we TP to the Blue Moon Gentlemen's Club instead?"

Seriously - that article IS kewl !

Wow - 4 to 20 minute ping times....and, I'm complaining about the 1-2 sec times on my satellite internet connection *grin*
Very interesting article though - so many good uses for virtual worlds....

And, online shopping while on Mars ? - hehe - "No, no, no !! - Mars is my billing address, not my ship-to address !!!!!!!" "ok - which idiot shipped my wii through the Van Allen belt ?? *sigh*"

I wonder what's easier: getting them to Mars, or getting them age-verified?

I gotta go look for those!

I don't know -- seeing what a virtual family did 20 minutes or so ago and vice versa would just reinforce how isolated I'd feel. But then I don't have a problem with isolation. They can send ME!
