I received a present from a friend and I want to give him one back. How can I do this when he is not online. I have searched for an answer, cant find it. Please help me. Thx

Open his profile, under the About section you'll see "Give item: Drop inventory here." Leftclick-drag the item you wish to give him from your inventory window to this area and release the mouse button. SL will transfer it to him and he will receive it when he logs in.

If the gift that you want to give is not transferable, you can contact the seller, pay for the object, and have the seller send it to your friend. Most sellers are happy to do this.
