I'm stuck using my laptop for now and all of a sudden I'm having a problem. When I click to log in it goes through the motions, says it's loading cache and then the system notices vanish as normal just before the Viewer pops up. The problem is the Viewer never pops up. When I go to Task Manager it says Second Life is running. After approx 10 minutes I then get a system error message that says:
Runtime error! abnormal program termination.
I am running on Vista 32 and am using the Vista but have never had any problems before. My partner is a certified Vista Tech doesn't think it's Vista either but isn't able to look at the system now to be sure.
I've searched and haven't found anything on this. Anyone else experience it and what did you do?

System specs.
What make and model of computer, type of processor, amount of memory, video card model number, video ram, wired or wireless, dsl or cable. etc. ?
Might do a windows update, if that still applies in Vista, then update video drivers from the video manufacturers website.
Might want to check the temperature.

Assuming: 1. This exact version of the viewer worked on this system before. 2. You've tried uninstalling/reinstalling, deleting the cache, restarting, blah blah blah.... I would move or delete the settings directory (forcing SL to create a new one), and see if that fixes it. Delete it only if you're happy to lose logs. It's located at: C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Application Data\SecondLife Change <username> to whatever username you're logged into Vista as.

I don't know if this even makes any sense in Vista, but on XP, a very simple but often overlooked thing to do is a system restore. I've certainly spent hours or days trying to solve a problem and said - I give up, I guess I'll do a system restore - and then everything's ok. It's annoying because you never know what the problem was.
Does Vista have something comparable?

Was it working before?
Did you do anything like install new software ?
What version video drivers? Sometimes the new ones cause trouble and have to be downgraded.
Can you get the SecondLife.log file ?

Used regularly before.
Tried Walkers suggestion and that didn't work. Btw, on Vista the location is different. Here it is for future reference:
C:\Users\[User Name]\AppData\Roaming
Unsure about the video drivers but the upgraded driver caused issues with videos and pictures so reverted back.
Only thing that was done was Windows Updates which I'm guessing is the problem. System Restore is available on Vista. Going to have to avoid that route for now with other things going on.
Thank you both for your help. If you think of anything else, give a shout.

Oh heck. I hope system restore works out for you. I can't think of anything else, but maybe a rogue NVidia driver version. (Some versions have been known to cause problems with SL... /111/30/228610/1.html). Good luck Bradley. =)

Just to clarify-a clean uninstall and reinstall (i.e. what Walker said, also deleting EVERY location where SL stores info) did NOT work?
That is damn scary-I hope you get it solved. Maybe actually downgrading the graphics driver first before a reinstall helps? I know I can't use the most current drivers, but both the laptop as well as the desktop have ATI cards.

Where would secondlife.log be on a Vista system?

Yep, that's the case. For kicks I installed Windlight and Dazzle as well. Uninstalling each before the next. Still nothing. My guess is it must have something to do with the windows updates I received today. Don't know what else. Unfortunately I didn't save the SL installer for the previous version. Is there a location to get older version? Figured I might try that. Other than that the only thing I haven't tried yet is Suzanne's idea to do a system restore.

Bradley, can you switch off any virus protector and see if SL comes up? This is exactly what ZoneAlarm used to do to things I was trying to use. The program would never come up, although it showed up as a process running.
Oh, and that g&^$%#& ZoneAlarm didn't stop doing that until I completely uninstalled it and deleted every trace of it. Switching it off didn't even help.

System restore might should be a first resort when mysterious problems occur on a windows computer.
It's easy, doesn't take long, it's reversible, doesn't lose data, doesn't require any thought, and often has no drawbacks at all.
I've been using Windows for years and I still tend to take the DOS approach of trying to understand the problem in order to solve it, at least to some extent.
I don't have Windows set to do automatic updates, although sometimes I might as well, depending on my mood.
One thing I have found with Windows updates, they have on more than one occasion replaced a current driver with an older driver.
I suppose with a laptop an easy thing to do as a test is to take it to a friend's place and try it there.

No luck with the anti-virus.
Looks like I'll have to wait. My other half is refusing to let me do a system restore right now and he's got his head buried in three other machines at the moment. (sigh) I always come last.

Yep had saw this problem after upgrading to 19.0.0 whatever, but only on the RL viewer patched version, RL needs and update which hasn't been released yet to work with 19.0.05 Try the Cool Life new Windlight viewer, normal Windlight & RC viewers were still working fine though
