Keyboard problems trying to create a SL account

Someone from outside of SL has asked me for assistance signing up for an account with SL, which I would be happy to provide if I had any idea what to suggest. Apparantly the keyboard they use has problems being understood when they try to create a SL account.

I have no idea what the problem might be or what to suggest they do about this. Any advice is welcomed.

From: someone
The last 2 times I tried to make an account at SL, I could not get past the 'create a name page' after which it took me straight back to the 'either login page/create account page'

Quite a while before that I had tried to create an account but when it got the 'duplicate the words/letters in the box' it will never reconize them! I am used to the problem, Nintendo is another site that will not reconise my keyboards, (1 from the Vista and 1 from the new Mac), previous to the change of systems/keyboards I had no problems with this type of system, and with Nintendo now, I simply ask my husband to register on his (old) keyboard in his comp room on his new computer, obviously I cannot ask him to register up for SL in there!!

I am a Daz PA also, so was interested in more than a cursory look, but while my keyboards are not reconised, I simply do not know what to do!

I hope this explains my problems well enough that you may be able to help me.

Maybe using the wrong language/keyboard setting? Some characters are in different key locations if it's set for a foreign language.
Other than that - sorry :(

I see no reason why the registration can't be done on the husband's old computer, assuming the wife's keyboard works on the download page and when using the client.

I would try using different browsers, since that's easy to do.

What language is the keyboard set to?

What language is the Windows localized to? (i.e., Chinese Windows, Italian Windows, etc.)

One might borrow the husband's keyboard for few minutes while registering.

What is the make and model of the keyboard?

What service pack level is the Vista computer??

Theoretically, a simple change to the localization or keyboard settings should allow the keyboard to emulate English or ANSI text.

These are available on practically every OS for precisely this kind of situation.

Either that, or order a USB keyboard that's 103-US?

That doesn't sound so much like keyboard problems, rather than the usual behaviour when cookies aren't activated/accepted in the browser. Many sites, instead of displaying a useful error message, just reload the page or - in case of captchas (those letter-number images that you have to type into a text field) - tell you over and over again that you got the combination wrong.

I have my browser set to silently refuse all cookies (and change the setting for trusted sites only if I have to), so I run into that all the time ...

If it *is* a keyboard problem, you could always use the on-screen keyboard that all Windows systems ship with.

Start - Programs - Accessories - Accessibility - On Screen Keyboard. I've had to use that from time to time when the Synergy keyboard sharing program gets confused or I need to reboot the machine the keyboard is plugged in to.
