Is it just me or did they break something else when doing the voice maintenance. I have at least 7.0 or 10.0 seconds lag before my Av walks in the direction I ask. This happens even after the packet loss meter has stabilized and the sim is loaded.
Before now it would only happen on 25% of sims I visited, now it seems to happen almost everywhere, it's getting impossible to do anything.

A lot of people have reported a reduction in performance around the time that the Voice client became the normal client.
A lot of others have decided such complaints are merely the rantings of the anti-voice faction on the forums and thus use the standard techo-snobbist reason that "it must be your computer"
But you are not alone in noticing slower performance. Whether its becuase of voice, the voice client, or other non-voice changes really hasnt been determined yet.
Some people have found the pre-voice client seems to help them, though.

Well I think they need to find the problem and fix it, because complex network programs will only become less responsive as features are added and problems ignored.

It could also be because they are getting greedy adding a massive amount of sims, and not updating the underlying infrastructure to a sufficient level as they go, so the network messages bottleneck.

Lag is getting worse ever since the Friday rolling restart after Voice was first introduced. I am gathering evidence to support this. It appears the situation's growing increasingly worse. I suspect a lot has to do with that blog post regarding the link between the colocation facilities; some sims appear to have a much worse time than others, and i wonder if the difference is where they're physically located. Below are some stats from my class 4 server. It's my understanding that Images Time, Net Time, and Sim Time (Other) aren't necessarily things under your own sim's control. And they're exactly the stats that have been going haywire since the update.

If you are on a sim with no scripts, the lag is not bad. When I first got my sim, I was buzzing around like crazy. So maybe it's the particular sim you are on.

i) if you have voice enabled, you have another process running on your computer - SLVoice. The process does use additional CPU and memory. I've done some analysis on my computer and on average on my setup it uses about 20% more CPU than skype and twice the memory footprint. Your mileage may vary.
ii) the veiwer does seem slower in general, it looks as if they made some changes to the rendering engine in the one that ships with voice, and this has reduced the framerate, my framerate falls below 5fps more often than it did before even when everything has downloaded, which is when things become "sticky".
iii) a number of people, including myself, have observed the client randomly "freezing" for 5 - 30 seconds. During this time, the computers CPU is typically running at 100%CPU which slows everything down to a crawl including the SLViewer. After around 30s everything starts again.
As such, I suspect most of the lag being observed is caused by the client and not sim or network overload.
It might be that my hardware (a 12 month old Core Duo, 2GB ram) is too old to run the veiwer, but I doubt if LL are really expecting people to use hardware less than a year old!

Matthew is quite right - this is simply a hardware issue. They didn't break anything, SL just got more demanding. IF you are that bothered, and don't want to use voice, simply kill SLVoice.exe in the Task Manager (or whatever the Mac/Linux equivalents are).
As for Matthews hardware - I'm running on an AMD Sempron single core 1.6ghz laptop with 1gb ram and it runs just fine, so your hardware should have no trouble. It seems to still be a memory issue, as my desktop with dual core 2.8ghz p4s has less ram (a measely 512mb) and runs a lot slower in SL. SL is very memory intensive.

Yes, that has been happening to me, even on a new sim with very few scripts. Darn that LL and their "improvements".

My suspicion is that there is something wrong in the rendering engine in the new viewer which causes performance lock ups with the video driver. My suspicion is that this primarily affects NVidia drivers. However, I'm currently working on mainly circumstantial evidence. Jira issue here: https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-2051Matthew

Matthew Both of mine use ATI Xpress cards, so you might be right.

IF a significant number of people notice a slowdown in performance - the "Its your computer" really doesnt hold water.
"Its your computer now that they made changes" is not the same thing. People shouldnt be expected to constantly upgrade their memory, video drivers, etc over updates without the company even informing them the newer versions are going to be more demanding.
As best I can tell the system requirements to use Second Life stated by LL did not change.
I know its unrealistic to expect the client to keep working well as the computers become progressively out of date - BUT - LL should have some planned obsolescence plan rather than fits and starts of major changes requiring upgrades with no explaination.

It has got worse!

I downloaded the voice client and found that the lag had increased quite noticably, I reinstalled the previous version that I had saved to my hard drive and found the problem remained the same.
Last night I went looking for some new clothes and found that after each store I visited I had to return to my own land to allow the PF usage to return to an acceptable level. On one or two occasions I stayed too long at the stores (about 5 mins) and my PC crashed.
This is a new problem to add to the many other factors that ammount to a failing infrastructure.... Second Life is failing, a little bit at a time, are they gradually pulling the plug in such a way that we start to feel that it is time to call it a day of our own volition. Thus saving them the hastle of complaining clients..... I really hope this is not the way of things as I am still new to the game and have set up a small club and shop, and at long last I am starting to sell some of my creations.
My pc is a home build and is rated as one of the fastest available. I am not nieive to the needs of the pc to run this program....So, either I am right ...or they have lost the engineers capable of repairing the system.
....Please feel free to visit 'Cain's Place' and say 'Hi!'
