Dear Citizens of Gotham!,
I've recently become aware that some people still think that you can tell whether an item has been copied by looking at the creator's name on the item. This isn't so.. It's possible to copybot an item and then replicate the item using 'full perms' enabled prims from a model that had previously been made available by the original creator (freebies etc). Replicating copybotted items with another residents name is very easy to do with scripts/tools that are freely available inworld.
There's hope!:
If trying to determine if an item is original then you should always check the prim dates using the Inspect option that can be found in the pie menu. If the item is made from prims with the same prim dates of a totally unrelated (modify enabled) item then it's possibly a fake.
Some copiers don't put a lot of effort into trying to hide their tracks and will use another creator's single modify enabled prim throughout the entire model. So using Inspect you'll see the exact same prim date and time on every prim throughout the entire model (Warning - This doesn't apply to sculpties as it's quite common for a creator to use the same prim throughout the entire model). Other copiers will make more effort and use several different prims. I've seen copies that use different prims from several modify enabled objects.
Advice for creators:
Never release items/freebies with full permissions enabled.
Use the prim dates to your advantage and don't make all your items with the same prim. Example - most sculpty rezzing tools require that you drop a prim in them with your name on it. Naturally it can be tempting to keep using that same tool and prim to import/rez all your sculpty models. Then one day you may accidentally release a product with modify enabled and therefore making it possible for all your older models to be copied by very naughty people!. And it will be totally impossible to spot the copies as they will all be sharing the same prim date that you had used for all your models.
I would even go so far as to suggest that Linden Lab should make the client display a warning when somebody enable permissions on their objects. Something like - "FUCK NO!!"
Hope this helps,
Bruce Wayne

I will never buy for exemple a house that is NO MODIFY because to fit it perfect on a land parcel you have to change it in 95% of the cases.
Same thing with for exemple hair. If you can't modify the size they will not fit on your head.
The only solution to stop copybotting is to stop with the open source viewer program.
Only allow the official sl viewer made by linden lab on the grid.
THIS will stop copy and trafic bots.
As long as the openviewers exist someone will make a tool to steal something. Even NO MODIFY objects.

Bruce Wayne modify not enabled ? you have to be joking - even the simplest of items need to be modified... shoes , clothes hair to start with. Perhaps a massive backlash from consumers...'don't buy goods you cant modify'
