Apparently in the latest Snowglobe Viewer version 1.2.0.2680, September 02, 2009, it has a built in translator that you can access via preferences>text chat where you should find a "chat language" drop down menu and a "translate chat" check box but it doesn't seem to appear for me. Anyone else give this a feature a go and any reviews on how well it works?

More details here: http://www.mydebitcredit.com/2009/09/09/second-life-does-translation/

edit: see Suezanne's links below for the correct build

I also quite like their new logo for Snowglobe:

Philip Linden commented on SNOW-93:

OK here are links to latest builds. IMPORTANT: In this build the feature is off by default - you need to set preferences->text chat->translate text.

For the actual production release, my thinking is that we need to have this feature on by default if it is to have real impact, since noone would otherwise
know to search for the capability. Thoughts or suggestions on that front welcome.

Here's the public URLs for the autotranslate builds

Perhaps you don't have the correct build.

Now where does one go in SL to find a place where people are chatting in Chinese?

Hmmm I'm on the SLdev mailing list so I'm sure I installed the right one but let me give your links a go. I tried uninstalling and installing previously to no avail. I heard a few others had problems getting the translation stuff to show.

I've installed in on two systems without any problems at all. You won't see the translation unless there other person is using another language and the client have to have the install language as something different than the one you are using. ie, with it not translate Spanish to another Spanish client, nor English to English, but it will do Spanish to English.
Also it only translate on the receiving client, so you cannot speak from English to Spanish, the other person must have the translator client to get the translation, if the speak Spanish to you it will translate it to English if that is your language.

I was about to try some of the non-English infohubs but it seems this build has messed up web based slurls in firefox. http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Inworld_Locations_for_Volunteers

Tried reassociating snowglobe in about:config in FF but doesn't seem to work ... argggh.

Web based slurls messed up for you Suezanne? I'm wondering if it's just on my end.

Slurls are working here with that build.

If you are getting to the SLurl map, you can right click the "Teleport Now" button and copy the link and paste it into SL as a workaround.

I'll give it a better test tomorrow when I can catch up with some of my esl euro friends.

In my Firefox, in Tools, Options, Applications, Secondlife is set to "Use Second Life (default)"

In XP, there's a registry setting, "HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT, secondlife, shell, open, command." which is currently set to

"C:\Program Files\Snowglobe\SnowglobeTestBuild.exe" --channel "Snowglobe Test Build" --settings settings_snowglobetestbuild.xml -url "%1"

quotes included.

That setting might be messed up.

Thanks! Got slurls working again somehow already.

Time for me to sleep as well but one thing I noticed is that it will translate my own chat if talk to myself like I often enjoy doing :p

[23:12] Joshooah Lovenkraft: bonjour mes amis (hello my friends)
[23:13] Joshooah Lovenkraft: comment vas tu aujourd'hui (how are you today)

As Destiny mentioned, it won't translate your chat back to the other person's default language unless they are also using this Snowglobe build but pretty handy and quite useful once it goes into the main viewer. It's not perfect by any means but it seems good enough to get across your point. It also translates chat from objects but doesn't seem to translate IMs. This will kinda suck for those that have developed translation devices though.

Drat. That would be the ONE best feature of a built in translator.

Look for Czech, Turkish, Korean, Brazilian in search. Sure, there are a lot of others, but these I know of.
