In preferences, I use Show Names Temporarily. It used to be that after the names faded away, I could see who an avatar is by moving my cursor over their avatar. There name would pop up for a moment.
This seems to be broken now, with the RC4 viewer (and maybe before).
Is it just me?

There were definitely some bugs with selecting too-far avatars lurking in the RC series. If zooming in a little doesn't help, maybe make sure that View->Hover Tips->Show Tips hasn't got itself unchecked?

I was going to suggest the same thing, make sure hover tips is turned on
