Login to Night?

I've been on SL for close to 3 years now, and there's been something which I've always found curious: 90% of the time I login it's night time. I know - not the worst thing that could happen, but curious nonetheless. Assuming that the wiki is correct, the day/night cycle is 3 hours of day, 1 of night. That means that if I login at a random time each time (which I pretty much do), I should have a 75% chance of getting daylight, yet that's not been the case.

To be honest, this is anecdotal evidence (I have not acutally recorded each login, but I might if I get bored enough).

The ever-required question is: has anyone else had this experience (doubtful), and more importantly, should I play the lottery (given my obvious ability to beat the odds)?

If you do intend to play the lottery I strongly recommend you stop logging in to SL. If you keep beating the odds by getting night all the time in SL, you'll never match so much as a single number in the lottery as you'll have squandered all your luck on something much less signifigant.

Believe me, I squandered my luck long ago...which is why this is so puzzling.

Sure...a logical answer. I refuse to accept something so simple. :)

easily explained if you happen to logon at the same general time each day.

Right, but as I said in my original post, I login at various random times throughout the day/night. Like I said, it's not a hugh deal, just a curiosity.

BTW, Void...I generally enjoy your posts (someone more pragmatic then me)....not to say that I didn't enjoy this one.

Though, like you, I've never taken notes, based on my feeling it seems to be always night when I log in as well. I've put this down to a combination of logging roughly the same time every day and to the slight annoyance factor making me remember the night log ins more - since I usually like to see things.

Fortunately I finally figured out how to make a WindLight midnight I can see in and incorporate it into the default day / night cycle.

I suppose that could be the answer...sounds resonable (you're such a buzz kill lol) ..I will, from now on log my logins so as to provide imperial data (or not) :)

Now that I think of it, seems to be night a lot when I log in
random times, even random places sometimes, but I seem to always be hitting those keys to make it noon

I second that. Fine, dry wit too.

depends how you log in too, logging into home if it is a private sim, you may be at somewhere that has fixed midnight in the preferences, if you sometimes log in at last place visited you are more likely to get daylight

It is always night when I log in at home. Always. I have never logged in at home and seen it be daytime.

But then the sim is set to always night time.

1st thing i do after each login:

open the environment editor, set it to my local real day time, load my testday, set duration to 24 hours and hit play.

i was hoping that would be an option to load that setting on login sometime, but i dont exect it to happen within the next 10 years...

Try logging at a time you know it will be daylight. If it isn't, definitely go for the lottery option.

funny thing is, I barely EVER hit night, or at least much less often than the 25% I should...

although that could just be perception since I tend to log in once, set noon, and leave myself logged in (so I miss the changes on TP's)

PS thanks (gonna make me blush)

Go into the WindLight Environment Editor / Advanced Sky and make a midnight that is a lot lighter. (Maybe I can figure out how to give you mine, but I have trouble uploading these things for some reason.) Call it something like "LighterNight" or something.

Then press the button for Day Cycle Editor and move the red dot to 12am and make the key preset your LighterNight. The transition between the fairly light 9pm and 12am are smooth and seamless. It's pretty cool really.

I wish I could figure out how to post XML files somewhere so I could just share them without it being manually entered. But I gave them all names with spaces - like "Night You Can See in," or "Rosey Glow." When I try to rename them so the files will upload correctly, they no longer work.

Anyway, I figured it out and I'm just an old dog really. Just can't explain it well.
