If you use the SL Beta Grid, texture uploads are effectively free, or rather they still cost L$10 but it's a dummy economy on the Beta, the L$ have no value and you always get lots in your account. So you could keep uploading the sculpts and testing until they fit right for no real cost.

I've just remembered that some time ago I read about someone who offered a service making real models of your avatar (statues, sculptures, dolls - whatever you like to call them). This was done digitally, not by eye, so presumably to do that the avatar data has to be exported from SL somewhere along the line. So that indicates it is possible, but I don't know how.

Myself I do not know enough about this stuff to be able to give u good answer.

Take a look in the Building Forum though- I believe I had read something once about working with Z-Brush or other programs like that where you could import OBJ files; concerning the actual avatars although I am not sure, though. In any case, you will no doubt get more folks there that actual work with this stuff. Good luck.

Did the software you were recommended work ?

Where did you export your avvy to ?

Was it complex to use ?

I just looked at the Instructions page in that Oogle website- I know I am not terrible techie sos it is not surprsing to me but I found the How To install part scarier than hell- maybe someone not afraid to tinker with stuff wd find it eas but is sure didn't look plug n play.

Oh hell, I just looked at that too. I never went beyond the pretty pics on the home page before.

Perhaps it's not as bad as it looks if you just follow it one step at a time. It reminds me of setting up an opensim, which looked equally terrifying, but following one instruction at a time produced something that worked, even though I had no idea what I had just done.

I'd be really interested in how people get on with this.

Here are the avatar meshes in .Obj form. They are not nearly as fantastic as it sounds -- but its a start.

GLIntercept and OGLE...
01-08-2009 12:09
I've been messing around OGLE all day and almost got it working (thanks spinster for pointing this out). Not hard to set up at all if you follow the instructions posted on:

http://ogle.eyebeamresearch.org/

I've hit one snag that hopefully I'll be able to bypass once I upgrade my graphics card:

You need to get GLIntercept working before OGLE will work. In order to get GLIntercept working, you MUST have a graphics card that supports OpenGL 2.0 and higher; else, it won't work for ya. I've been reading some forums and seen some images of SL content exported to other 3d progs, and I must say, this certainly has some exciting promise.

One more bit I read about; OGLE will not work correctly when capturing SL data if objects are positioned via vector positioning. You'll be able to capture the data, but all objects captured will be stacked on top of each other. I'm not 100% positive of this conclusion, but I believe this means that you are limited to capturing avatars and avatar attachments. *for anyone who's interested.

Anyways, can't wait to start capturing mah stuffs and importing into 3ds max.

What about non transferable avs? I completely redid mine, it looks nothing like the original. But, not knowing better, I began with a cheap shape someone else had created. So it's no trans.

Just curious.
