Windows has been nagging me to install SP3.. Anybody have any experience with it vs SL? Does it work ok?

I'm on SP3 and have had no noticeable problems after more than a week.

Works great, is faster and more streamlined with more security.

I have heard it runs great too, but I am skeered to install it. SP2 crashed my old pc and I had to buy a new one. /me doesn't want any more problems.

I don't blame you for being cautious, Kira. SP2 was a major overhaul of XP, which made a lot of changes to the way it worked. A lot of computers were rendered useless at the time.

SP3 is not nearly so dramatic of a change, though. It's relatively minor. Most of the changes are security-oriented. You shouldn't have any problems. If you're concerned, back up your data, and set a restore point before you proceed.

That's interesting. In what ways? I have a very pedestrian machine and SP2 went in without a hitch. Since I bought it, XP has performed beauifully actually.

My GF's el-cheapo HP Pavillion at the time stopped working. I called HP tech support, as it was still under warranty, and they told me it wasn't compatible with SP2. To get it running, I had to wipe the hard drive and reinstall Windows from scratch. SP2 was not an option on that machine.

Not every computer had problems with SP2, obviously, but many did.

Was it an AMD processor? I'm seeing some goggle hits that SP3 has problems with HP machines using AMD processors.

And, of course, with the motherboard (Asus A8N32) I have.

I have an Intel chip/mobo.

I have every single Microsoft service pack and update installed.

The currently released viewer has been very stable.

The only issue I seem to have is logging of with the music stream turned on.

That seems to lock up the program on exit....but not always.

I don't remember for sure, but I think it was Intel, actually. I've got the thing in my basement somewhere now. I'll take a look when I get a chance.

It was SP2, not SP3, that borked that old HP machine. I doubt any current SP3-related problems would have any bearing on what happened.

I don't remember what versions I have but if it was update I got it no problem here.
Though the IE 7 is pain in the behind, quit using it.
