I just ordered a new computer. I had a nice tax return, plus the economic stimulus...why not? Intel Quad core, 4gb RAM, Nvidia 8800 video card, 22" widescreen monitor.
It's a massive upgrade from my 18-month old Dimension with the ATI x1300.
How big of a difference is this going to be? Realistically... I hear that these things get over 25fps but what are we seeing with Windlight? Is such a statistic true? The x1300 was supposed to average 20 fps but I don't think I ever saw that in practice.

As with anything it will depend on your exact settings, but I'm running a Mac with the 8800 GT (512mb) with all settings on full except for particles (mid-way) and draw-distance (64m) and I get 30 to 80 fps depending where I am. The Windows client is generally better performance-wise than the Mac one.
But it will depend on whether you want higher draw-distances, or frequent especially complex/busy places.

I can tell you that losing your ATI card will be enough to notice a huge difference. Nvidia is so much smoother. From a fellow ATI card user I feel your pain. They are totally incompatable with SL. You system may have been strong enough, but that card, oh that card.

Sometimes I'm able to hook up to a quad-core Dell and the SL experience is transformed. Smooth movement, full Windlight effects, almost no lag at 256m draw distance. In non-busy areas you can move smoothly with 512m DD, but that's pushing it a bit in busier ones...... If you're used to an old computer, the difference is amazing. Having said that, one still gets lag sometimes in busy places and occasionally one still crashes. Windows Vista seems good except that it crashes occasionally too and very occasionally needs to be restarted from the disc which is a bit of a pain. What I have discovered is that the variation between SL releases is more noticeable on a better computer - like you're just thinking how good SL has been and then after an update it goes a bit slower or whatever. But, all in all, new computer......go for it!!!

Lag is a part of SLife, I did expect that.... but I'm so excited, can't wait to see the difference! Thanks

From: Cristalle Karami Yay, it just shipped! *rubs hands together greedily* /me looks on forlornly!! Tomorrow's big job is to kill my 4 year old computer, which is completely stuffed with crap and bits of old programmes and running so slowly you could make a cup of tea whilst waiting for Internet Explorer to open, and restore it using several CD's and bits of cable to it's new out of the box condition, when hopefully it will perform better. I've been putting it off for months, but I fear I now have no other option. Wish me luck - I may never be seen again!!

From: Cristalle Karami oh snap! Good luck!! Thank you - you too!!! I am such a geek, but getting a new computer is like christmas and birthdays for 10 years all rolled into one!! I really wanted a new one, but himself indoors isn't daft enough to have the wool pulled over his eyes. His argument is that running slowly is still working, isn't it, and is not just cause for replacement. Guess it's my own fault for over-speccing it in the first place!!

Actually, I've got an ATI X1300 video card. If you get time to post once you've finished playing with your new PC, I'd be interested to hear what the difference is compared to the Nvida. Thanks

Oh, just in case this is your first time with Vista ... From: someone Windows Vista's User Account Control security "feature" - which I like to call Sir Obnoxious Naggy McNag - is bound to drive any power user batty within an hour of downloading, installing and configuring your favorite programs. If you hate Vista for asking you every single time you try to do something if you're sure you want to, then disable User Account Control. The How-To Geek's got the details: From: someone Open up Control Panel, and type in user account into the search box. You'll see the link for "Turn User Account Control (UAC) on or off". Click it. Uncheck the box, and reboot your computer. You should be done with obnoxious prompts! Now, Microsoft highly recommends that you do not do this. To make their point, after you ignore them and do it anyway, a scary little red X shield icon plants itself in your taskbar, visually screaming at you about the security risk. After the jump, find out how to rid yourself of that sucker. In Control Panel, go to the Security Center. On the left hand side, click the "Change the way Security Center alerts me" and choose "Don't notify me and don't display the icon (not recommended)" as shown. From: someone Of course, you probably shouldn't do this to Mom and Dad's PC, but this is a must-change for anyone who doesn't need Windows holding their hand at every crosswalk. — Gina Trapani All quotes and images stolen from : http://lifehacker.com/software/vista/windows-vista-tip--disable-annoying-need-your-permission-to-continue-prompts-230866.php
