When you get in world you will land at a place where you can walk through a set of tutorials. When you finish there you exit to an Orientation type of place (something Island). I'd suggest that as soon as you finish the orientation/introduction you go to Oxbridge University and go through the tutorials and ask questions there. You will get a huge head start on SL. Also, ask questions here...it's what this forum is for. Jackie.

Layla,

I'll give you a landmark to a place with a great "getting started" tutorial when I am in world tonight...

Or try this: Click Search at the bottom of your screen. Click the Places tab. Enter "Caledon Oxbridge" in the search window. Click on the search result and then click the Teleport button to go there.

Once there, read the signs. Then follow the red arrows on the ground to the other buildings with more signs.

If you have questions, ask anyone with the title "Professor" over their head.

If you learn better from books than from classes, you might want to read the Official Guide to Second Life. I found it very helpful when I first joined.

Layla,

One thing that helps is Search.

Hit the Search button at the bottom of your screen, choose the Places tab, type in whatever you're looking for, and hit ENTER.

(Make sure the "include mature content" is checked)

And another thing: don't give up. Come back here and ask questions. A lot of us like to help.
