Just like most folks, I have had my fair share of crashing! As of late, seems I have turned it into my hobby. I decided to investigate this a bit further. I did some 'speed' tests on my DSL connection. Turns out that my average download speed is 220-230 kbps. SL default is 500 kbps. Common sense tells me that SL (by default) is downloading information faster then my connection can handle, soooooooooo.....I changed my setting in my preferences to 220 kbps. Guess what? I haven't had a crash today or I should say..yet. I don't really know if this makes any difference, but I thought I'd pass this along to everyone. Some of you have cable, some have DSL, so do a search on the net for DSL or Cable download speed tests, do several and write down the results. Average that out, you may be surprised. I am at the end of my DSL hub and I was a bit disappointed at my speed, but DSL is distance dependent where cable is user dependent, that is, how many users are sharing your cable feed. If any of you techno types have any thoughts on this, please jump right in... Very Happy

I always try so set the download speed to only allow 80% total of what I recieve, never full.
That way if I want to surf or do other internet related stuff SL isn't hogging it all. peace |

Yes, you're absolutely right. Slower is faster sometimes =)
When I first started in SL a guy who was quite helpful in other areas, told me to increase both my bandwidth and my cache to the max. After staggering around for a week when I wasn't crash-dead, I met another guy who went Umm! and told me to do what you have discovered. And its your upload speed that your slider should be set to if you want the smoothest ride. |

Crashes are very rare for me since I started using The Nicholaz Viewers. Once a week is probably a generous average. Except for issues most like caused my my ancient video card, the game in and of itself is pretty stable. I only suffer the problems we al do at ties, be it lag, slow or no rezing and transactions etc.

I am bumping you to an 8.5 on the Official Trout Measuring Instrument of Sluttiness. You are an enigma - on the one hand a sweet, gentle, intelligent woman who we would like to wrap up in our arms and protect, and on the other, a temptress to whom we would like to do all sorts of unmentionable things. Congratulations and shame on you! You are a bit of a slut. |

Turns out that my average download speed is 220-230 kbps. SL default is 500 kbps. how do you determine your own download speed? |

My average download speed is about 700kb/sec and I usually leave my SL preferences at the default of 500, except when there are other people on the network also playing SL or Warcraft. (Oddly enough its the warcraft player that crashes the most often). Occasionally when I've just tp-d into somewhere and its being slow to load, I will whack the bandwidth (in SL) up to max for a couple of seconds, just to get the place rezzed, and then drop it back to 500.
Lowering bandwidth helps with high packet-loss. As for crashes, my system hardly ever does. I've experienced occasional temporarly freezes (not more than a couple of seconds) with the more recent releases, but as for a complete crash, I think it's been a good couple of months since that happened to me. Most of my crashing issues stopped when I doubled the RAM in my PC from 1 to 2 gig. _____________________
