So.. once a parcel is almost full and say you have 1 prim left and you rez an Item that is made of 10 Prims - It returns 9 older ones to your lost and found.
Is this a bug? I thought you are supposed to get a Parcel Full Error
If not how does it select the items which to return? In my case it seemed random.

are you the owner of the land? did it return items belonging to another creator? where they scripted objects? I ask because I have seen this to.

This is odd. I know in the past I've had it just refuse to rez an object with prims in excess of parcel capacity. I'm not seeing a relevant pjira entry. And can't get in-world just now to try to replicate. Wonder if this could be undesired new behavior somehow introduced while fixing the earlier parcel permissions problems.

a month ago I was using a friends land to build on, a skybox thing, about 100 prims in about 10 pieces. the friend, the owner of the land inadvertently rezzed an object that went well over the prim limit, he has shops with other peoples objects in it, but for some reason it decided to return my objects alone, the only constant was that it returned the parts of my build with scripts in them, returning 4 parts out of the 10, my assumption was that mine was the last created build on the land prior to the prim count being exceeded, I hadn't even taking a copy of the whole build into inventory.
however, the script observation maybe a red herring, as those parts where also the last amended.

There was an old bug that would cause existing prims to be deleted if they didn't belong to the current land owner, and the land owner rezzed something new that exceeded parcel prim count. That bug supposedly was fixed well over a year ago! I had a client of a sim owner that I was working form, who was renting a parcel that came with a house owned by the sim owner. The renter "owned" the parcel. When he sailed a huge boat onto the parcel and disembarked, the resulting dump of a large vehicle and an auto-rexxing static vehicle section would cause the house and landscaping plants of the parcel to be returned to anyone who wasn't the parcel owner.
Again, that was looked at and fixed over a year ago.
What SL client were you running when this happened? Because it should have merely generated a "Parcel too full to rez that" message.

This is interesting because I've recently experienced something on our group land. I'm the group owner of this group land and there are builds which have been present for two years which have been returned because someone (an officer in the land group) inadvertently rezzed an 800 prim ship.
Not only was the ship rezzed (when there were only 500 prims left), it returned parts of the old build which had been there for two years.
Some of the build was by someone who is no longer on SL and whose account no longer exists. However two other builds were by people who are still around - lucky for me as we were able to repair the damage (sadly LL don't do rollbacks on mainland sims).
It's very worrying because anyone could rez large prim objects and either deliberately or accidentally cause mass-returns, and there is little you can do about it (and then consider self-replicating objects also....)
When I spoke to concierge about it, not only were they unable to rollback the sim, but more importantly, he was unable to explain why a new object which exceeds the limit of prims displaces older objects. His advice is to lock all the prims and turn off build - which may work but it kind of "kills" an active location that many people share.
I've heard it mentioned that it happens particular on parcels which are using more prims than they are allocated, and which are "borrowing" prims from under-used parcels in the same sim (owned by the same owner/group). This is certainly true in my case, though I don't have official confirmation of that issue.
I hope it gets sorted out, it really sucks to lose content in this way.

Sounds like it is time for a JIRA bug report. Have them reference past bug reports by me, prior to the JIRA system. Data Linden was one of the people who worked with me in resolving that bug last time. Sounds like it has resurfaced.

I've known this to happen if the object isn't owned by the group owning the land

I accidentally rezzed an item that was larger than the amount of prims left and it auto-nuked random stuff from my displays and building parts to my Lost and found. which means that I can now go on somebodies group land and rez my 1100 Prim ship and watch all their stuff disappear in a thousand pieces?.. Cool

If it works like the old bug did, you have to be the parcel owner, or the land has to be deeded to a land group and you're in the group with a role that allows you to build. If you just visited someone else's parcel, and it had Build turned on but you were NOT in any way associated with the parcel's "owner", then the bug wouldn't happen.
