I have some island land and I want to set up some nice little store/stalls. Do I have to subdivide my land into separate parcels for each stall?? Also -- what rental-systems do y'all recommend? Hippo is said to be the best -- but I think it would be overkill for me and my 6 little stores. Thanks guys -- and Happy New Year!!

You don't need to divide your land up. Each store can have its own rental agreement.
Indeed you don't need a rental system if you feel capable of handling the payments and keeping track of renters yourself. There is no requirement to have a rental system.
However I use Hippo and Apez. There are pros and cons with both. Apez doesn't count prims at all and Hippo counts prims badly, but in terms of management they are both good. Hippo is very reasonably priced.
Apez has a version that is free to purchase but takes a percentage from all your sales, so you have to weigh up the pro's and cons.
There are other rental systems available.

Fatima and I have a number of small stores on one of our sims. We use the Hippo system, but use the Objects tab in about land to control prims - it's way too fiddly to set up individual plots.
However, if you go that route, be prepared to check your prims every day - we had one renter who wildly over-primmed and got huffy when I pointed it out (gently; nor had I charged him for the over-primmage); and generally, renters who let their boxes go into arrears, wait for it to go to vacant, then re-pay (getting themselves an extra 3 days - the default - each time). And of course there's those who simply let their rental go into arrears/vacant and hope we don't notice..... But let's not be cynical. It's a lot of fun and we have some really good quality merchants who are pleased to be with us. Don't forget to raise traffic either - we hold regular music events right by the stores every fortnight or so. We don't use campers. One thing - popular sellers will have stores all over the place. Often we find that buyers will use the smaller shops, such as we have, to identify the creator and then TP to their main store to see what else they have (and of course, buy there!) So be prepared for renters to pull out fairly frequently citing "lack of sales at your location" Inc
