If so, you will get to relive some of it. If not, you will get to experience what some of us are too familiar with. From the Grid Status page:
From: someone
Logins and In World Services Down for Maintenance Wednesday a.m
Posted by Status Desk on January 2nd, 2010 at 12:30 pm PST

Wednesday January 6 2010 at 5:00 a.m. Pacific, we’ll be closing logins and disabling major in world services for ninety minutes of upgrade work on our databases.

During the maintenance, logins and account registrations will be unavailable.

Residents who are in world when maintenance begins will lose access to services such as

* mapping,
* teleport,
* inventory,
* object and L$ transfers, and
* LindeX.

We’ll warn in world several minutes before the outage begins, and we’ll post any changes to the scope and schedule of the work here as they develop.

We appreciate that this will inconvenience a number of our Residents. The maintenance work is to enhance the stability and performance of our database-backed services.
/me wonders what SL will be like that day after returning home from work in the late afternoon.

So if things go true to Maintenance Wednesday form, SL will be probably be shut don most of Wednesday as that 90 minutes will become several hours, and SL will be wobbly for the entire weekend afterward.

I really wish there was an easy way to take what I do there and migrate it back to the regular grid.

Hmmm, I wonder if Emerald's object backup ability will work for that?

The fun thing about Maintenance Wednesday used to be the forums because everyone would turn to the forums for their SL fix waiting for the magic word that logins were open. The forums would become a huge chat room full of levity along with the whining about how long it was taking.

Then someone would post the awaited thread "I'm In!" and the rush would be on.

This time, I won't be able to play forum games during the outage since work has gotten very good at blocking my every access attempt.

It's just too bad a lot of the people who added so much to that fun, Raymond, Collette, Conan, etc are gone. :(

Warning, Will Robinson! Being inworld when loss of these things starts happening used to lead to inventory loss:

* mapping,
* teleport,
* inventory,
* object and L$ transfers, and
* LindeX

Without a rock solid handshake on any interaction that alters inventory, it is easy for timing windows to occur that result in small - or large - inventory corruption. I think LL has closed many of these holes, but I wouldn't bet on it.

It was kind of cool if you managed to stay in, though.

Like wandering a bleak wasteland with only a few rare strangers in it; no ability to teleport, kinda post apocalyptic...

Does Lusk Woods still exist in Beta or has it been wiped. I spent many an update Wednesday hanging out there. This time I think I'll hang out on OpenGrid and see if the population jumps any.

pfft, Saturday is going to suck.

I still run Show and Tells on Wednesday afternoon. I was the first event run on the updated version most weeks. And, yea, we found the bugs...

Oh, you mean like any other time when you're the only one wandering around in some fantastic sim, painstakingly built by someone hugely talented who then, depressed and frustrated by the lack of visitors who'd congregate elsewhere to buy ballgowns and sex beds, packs it in after a few months.

There's plenty of parts of London like that.. don't need it in SL too.

Yeah, when I saw that I thought, "Ahh, the good old days."

I do hope they use the "bang on things" image.

I use Meerkat. I almost always build there these days.

From what I remember, the day before maintenance day, things started to get a little wobbly and unstable. Almost like they were trying things out beforehand. And yes, forums were were the place to meet up with others to get your SL fix. Guess the saying is true (to some extent) "what's old is new again"?!

I think I will spend part of today playing with the backup/restore abilities of Meerkat, Imprudence and Emerald.

Ahh, that takes me back. The monkeys and the blue dialog box in the top right of the screen saying "Ok, everybody out of the pool!"

I remember Downtime Wednesdays. The grid is more stable today then it was back then and we are more informed on what's going on these days via twitter, sl forums, sl status reports and plurk. :P

I love the monkey message
"The grid is down while we bang on things"

Might have to dust it off and put the free Grid Wrench back out.
