I have two things in my inventory I can't figure out. One avatar has the item "Smooth, Cool AO", and another avatar has the item "Free Face Lighter". I've tried to wear both on my "active" avatar, but nothing changes. What are these things?
Thanks

Getting used to this forum has been the best thing I've found yet in SL. An "AO" is an animation overrider. It well replace default animations like standing and walking. You may have to turn it on to make it actually do anything. Detach it and then put it back on and see if it gives you any command help in chat. You also might try "AO on" or "/AO on". A face-lighter is just what it says. It will make your face appear brighter then usual to other residents. A lot of people like to use these, but the cheap ones are usually pretty awful. You also might have to turn that on. Also, try setting your lighting to Midnight and see if you can tell the difference.

An AO is an animation overrider. It is used to replace the default animations such as your walk. I'm not sure about the one you have, but some are attached as HUD's rather than being worn on the avatar. Also, you have to be in an area that has scripts enabled when you attach it to see the effect. Try putting it on again and walking around. I'm guessing your walk will look different.
As time goes on you may decide to buy some different animations to put in an AO, or buy one as a complete package. Animations are a great way to customize your avatar, but they are also totally optional.
The Face Light you mention is a transparent prim (or prims) set to a transparent texture, but with the light effect turned on. You have to have local lights enabled to see the effect. Try setting the sun to midnight and wearing it. I'm guessing you will notice the light it gives off more easily then.
Something to note, people wear face lights to minimize shadows on the avatar face, and to "improve" the way they look. There is no guarantee, though, that other people will see what you see, and in many cases a poorly constructed facelight looks insanely bright on other people's monitors or disrupts the local lighting effects in an area. Also, there is an option to switch off attached lights, and anyone with them switched off will not see the effect. Wearing one is a personal choice, but I would suggest going without at first, and playing with the windlight settings to make things look pleasing on your monitor.

I've noticed that one friend of mine who uses a Mac has a blinding face light, and I have often wondered why it didn't drive her crazy. Then one day she logged in on a Windows box and the first thing she asked me was, "Does my face light look REALLY bright today for some reason to you?" The point is, face lights can look radically different on different viewers, as Nimue said.
