Unusual grid-wide griefing attack

The Lindens came out to clear the sim where my store is from objects that offer an object to people every second. When they'd been cleared I asked if the objects were all over the sim or just on my part. It seems the attack is/was grid-wide. The unusual thing about it that the objects doing the griefing are owned by an av that registered in 2006. A parting shot? Or a hacked av?

Maybe it was a former ad-farmer trying a new line of work.

Likely a full mod/copy/transfer prim from 06 embedded with the griefer stuff so that the person named on the prim got the blame.

Philip Linden griefed Cartmel once.. or at least a bunch of icky pics inside his beach ball did. ;)

That was my first thought but then I realised that the offers came from objects that are owned by the person - not necessarily created by that av. Only the owner could have placed them unlerss there's a technical way round it that I don't know about.

hmmm. Maybe another leak in the grid that the kids found. Or like you thought.. a parting shot.

Ah.. forgot.. Christmas break! The young ones are out of school. I imagine there will be a few of these then.

You know.. it really has been a long time since the last "big" griefer attacks.

What did you do? If you muted it, you won't get them but your customers will and many would just go away.I've been having an unusually low sales day today, but I didn't go in until not long ago and the 'plague' might have been going on a long time - turning people away.

Awwww, that's sad. I don't understand the griefer mentality? I think some people do it because it makes them feel powerful because they have no power in their real life perhaps?

I'm not sure what are the exact conditions, never investigated it in full, but it worked for me at least once - If an object is shared with group, and you're a member of that group, you may be able to modify it without being it's owner. Then you can drop a script in, which will become owned by the object owner and execute that way.

Does the Internet Explorer bug about which I have been reading, that seems to be widely used at the moment to hack game accounts, have a current wide use in hacking Second Life accounts?

I think that exploit was patched last Wednesday. If you haven't done so already, go to Windows Update and get it.

But how would you get hold of that object so that you could drop copies of it all over the place? Returning objects that are deeded to a group just returns them to the previous owner. And when you get hold of it, you're the owner.

Put another object in, that will become owned by the same owner, as well as anything inside it. Make a script rez it, make the script inside the rezzed object warp it across the grid using global coordinates. Isolated sims will remain inaccessible, and navigating around no object entry parcels will be tricky, but if you carefully plot course along Linden roads, it should be possible to a degree.

It's possible. But way too contrived for practical use, you'd have to be really concerned about someone particular getting the blame. :)

Usually happens when school is out. LL has done a pretty good job of taking the teeth out of the attacks though. I still get a chuckle when I think back to when there was a group called "dissention" who were going to bring SL to it's knees. I stood in my skybox and watched as tons of boxes with their logo rezzed and made loud noises.. boxes were birthing boxes and they kept piling up. It was less than five minutes before all were gone. :D
