Hello,
I use a laptop PC with a large external monitor attached. The laptop monitor is usually turned off.
Can I use the laptop's monitor to display some of the SL windows, eg the inventory, IM window ? while leaving the main SL window on the bigger external monitor ?
Thanks
FH

I run three monitors and have been annoyed about that for a while -- there is no way to do that other than by running SL in a window and stretching this window across both monitors. With two monitors, your avatar is likely to end up split between the two, with three, things become very distorted. However, there IS a way to keep an IM or chat window on a separate monitor, if you log IMs. You can use the program called XTail, which will continually read that log and scroll it at you as it comes. http://www.xymantix.com/programs/xtail.html

Agreed,
I have three monitors and in my graphics programs I often tear off tool palettes and put them on the other monitors for more viewable space. It would be a great option if we could do the same with SL.

You might find it suitable to stretch the SL window across one screen and half or so of the second; this gets the avatar off the edge of the monitor and still allows extra room for UI elements.

I remember this being requested a while ago - it would be useful for me too. No action on it from LL though.

Unlikely to happen any time soon, that SL viewer UI widgets could be moved outside the main viewer screen. As I understand it the thing is, in the interest of cross-platform compatibility, all the tool palettes are being rendered by OpenGL just like the world graphics are. This is different from something like Photoshop, where tool palettes are drawn by the same mechanism that draws 2-D doodads like "minimize/maximize/close" buttons on program or folder windows. So the SL tools are kind of stuck inside the viewer window without major changes to the viewer and lots of effort to keep things working on various platforms

From: Anti Antonelli So the SL tools are kind of stuck inside the viewer window without major changes to the viewer and lots of effort to keep things working on various platforms Actually, it could be done portably without major changes if they made some kind of message passing API... dragging windows out and dragging items between screens can't be done this way, but separating the IM window would be relatively simple. But there's no way that's happening.
