How do I get 'glow' to work?

I posted this originally in building tips section but received no replies so I'll try here! -----

I use the WindLight viewer most of the time and I've noticed more and more objects with nice glow effects. However, when I try to get an object to glow it won't. I check the 'glow' option and the level indicator can be altered. I set the 'light' option and also 'full bright' and the object illuminates the surrounding surfaces and looks bright but still no glow around it. Am I missing something? The comp is clearly capable of seeing glow as I see it elsewhere.

Well, this is mysterious. But what is this "'glow' option" that you check? I don't see anything like that in the Editor. Just adjusting the glow level for a face is enough to make it work for me, with or without full-bright, and with or without a light feature. You're using 1.18.6 (76453), right? I checked the jira, and didn't find anything relevant there, either.

There is a 'glow' option tick box next to the 'full bright' one on the version of the WindLight viewer I'm using. It's not on the normal regular viewer.

FWIW, my version of the Windlight viewer (1.18.6 (76453) Dec 29 2007, according to Help / About), running on Linux, doesn't have that checkbox. I'm pretty sure this is the most recent version, so... might want to check if you're using this one, too, or download it from http://secondlife.com/community/firstlook.php. (But I don't remember this particular trouble with the earlier versions; couldn't say for sure if I saw that checkbox back then or not.)

I've managed to get the glow to work on my comp. *logs in her alt* Let me see what I did...

You have to have the atmospheric shaders enabled for it to work, from my little experiment. And the full bright box should be checked for best affect.

The plot thickens - I can see other peoples' glows but not my own. Thinking about it, I've only seen glowy things on private islands - I can't remember seeing any on mainland.

Oh wait! I bet you're not seeing the Windlight glow at all, because of shader settings, but are seeing *particle* glow that you can see without Windlight. (Until there's a scripted way to turn glow on and off for a texture--which is coming--there's no way to make the glow feature work well for a switched light, for which the particle glow has been used for a long time.)

Yup...it IS the atmospheric shaders. That's the only reason I can think of that it wouldn't work....if windlight is working over all. Ya have to have those all checked for glow to work. In mine....the glow is really really bright even on the lowest setting. But it's cool.

I have a Windlight glow going on a sphere in my hideaway not far from my shop. It's mainland ;)

But I haven't seen too many people USE this glow, probably because it can't be turned on and off that easily.. err, clicked away, that is. I only did it, because I like playing with and breaking the new toys!

Milla, try it with a transparency and a low shine. Looks like a pretty soap bubble to me ;)

They did fix that in the last two updates (or at least they did for me :)).

(Unless you have a class 0 card, but then you wouldn't even see ripple/reflective water with atmospheric shaders turned off)
