Ever since I did the gallery for my mom.....suddenly everyone I know wants to check out SL. LMAO.....go figure.

So.....ok.....now my best friend who is an incredible artist.....has decided she wants a peek. Problem is (for me) she's a Mac user since she's a graphic artist.....so, being a Windows user I'm not going to know exactly what she will encounter using a Mac.

Can anyone......in relative simple terms......sum up the primary differences of being in SL using Mac??? She may well be coming in soon and I at least want to be able to help her
with the basics.

Actually....even a notecard in-world would be great because I can pass it on to her.

:o I feel like these forums have been my home these last few days LOL

(oh, my bro made it in safely...and my sister....tho her laptop crashed lol)

You can use either the control or command (also known as apple or clover) key for ctrl-whatever shortcuts.

The alt key may instead be called option.

If you don't have a right mouse button, use command-click.

...and that's really about it for differences in day-to-day usage.

Everything is white, pristine, and perfectly aligned. There are no bugs, or issues, and the physics engine is beautiful, able to calculate the movement of the fur of a rabbit every 1/8 of a second, for a field of rabbits. There are realtime shadows, and the avatar mesh is beautifully crafted by a master.

Draw distance isn't a factor, and you can zoom your camera across the entire grid, and walk across sim lines without any air-walking whatsoever. Sculpties are ten times as detailed, and assume higher levels of detail based on your original vision, even if the sculpt map is a windows-quality image.

Anyhow, no idea. But wouldn't that be awesome?

There are few differences, but they are described here, along with some preference setting tips on getting good performance.

It'd probably give me a reason to switch. as it is I prefer power and control (linux), and knowing that if there is an app/game/etc out there, there is a version/clone/port/alternative already available for me (windows)

A friend of mine uses a Mac and she has this blinding white facelight that looks to me like a phosphorus grenade has just exploded. Once a couple of months ago, she asked me if her face light was always that bright, and I said, well, yes. Turns out she was using a Windows machine that day, and the light appeared to her as it usually appeared to me. She toned it down that day, but every time since that I have seen her, she has been using her regular Mac AND has had the retina-scarring facelight. I have to conclude that there is some difference in the way Macs and PC render lights.

Each time i have had a RL friend enter SL, i have in the end regretted it.

I wish it were not like that for me and hope you have better results.

that may have nothing to do the operating system, and everything to do with monitor calibration. while the OS's both have different default gamma settings, IIRC macs use a brighter gamma, so you'd expect the opposite result. but a monitor that isn't calibrated for color and brightness matching is going to look different than one that is (I'm better the mac monitor is using a higher color temperature than the pc monitor).

different types and even brands of monitor, can also have wildly different contrast and brightness ratios and ranges.
