Apologies if I'm putting this in the wrong forum, I couldn't see another one that answered my query.

Are there any really cheap rentable properties in SL? I'm not after a shopfront or anything classy, and I only need a minimum amount of prims, say 10 or so.

I've been running searches on property but haven't found anything in my price range, which is about L$25 - L$50 per week.

Yes. That is a Very Miserly Sum Indeed.

I'm running an experiment to see if it's possible for my Avie to earn a living in SL without being reduced to camping, this is why my cash is so tight.

Am I asking for the moon on a stick?

Cheers

Sounds to me like you're better off joining a group and then setting that to home.

You can Join The Forum Cartel, and use The Hangout as Home. There is a skybox changing room available as well.

That sounds like a good idea! Thanks for the tips. The changing room will definately come in handy.

Is there a weekly fee payable to enter groups and am I allowed to have any permanently rezzed prims in group areas?

There is no fee to join the Cartel Group. As far as rezzing goes, all members can rezz on the group land, but you are asked to pick up after yourself. Any items left out are generally meant to be for the group to use. If you want to rezz things that you alone wish to use, you will have to take them back when not using them. take a look at the Hangout, it is Allana. If it suits your needs, feel free to join.

What is your intended use for the 10 prims? Are you actually rezzing something? If so, what?

I could probably let you rent 10 prims for your price, but I'd need to know more about it.

I probably won't need all ten, but I'm looking for somewhere I can rez an SLExchange box, an OnRez box and possibly other similar boxes if I find other similar services.

I did initially look into prim storage, but the problem I came up against is that I'm a very unskilled builder and I don't know if I'd sell enough products each week to make the payments they were asking for.

I hit the same problem when I looked to see what shop rentals cost.

So I thought I'd look for the cheapest roach motel I could find and leave my boxes there.

Failing that I'd be happy to give 50% of my sales money to anyone that would let me store my prims on their land, until I'm making enough to rent my own.

Of course, any "Normal" person would just pull a fiver out of their pocket and change it for L$, solving the whole problem at a stroke, but as I said, I'm trying out an experiment.

So, you're trying your hand at making some money on your own steam now...that's good. And you've decided to use a Slex machine to sell...I couldn't tell from your post what exactly you plan to sell...

I'd be very curious to know what you're selling...I wouldn't want you to put something out that isn't worth your while, or have you become dissuaded from reaching your goal because you're not making the cut.

I just see so many mini stores or kiosks that are in no way appealing or inspired...no one is interested in reading-into an obscure product...just be sure you create something people may want, make it the best quality you can, and market it with an actual plan or motive.

You have to bring the eye to the product, and then you have to lure them in to read the fine-print. Don't waste your time on a Slex machine if no one is going to take the time to read, click, read...click...

Are you going to sell a product? Or a service? And you mentioned not knowing how to build...how do you plan on selling a self-made product without the skill to build it? If you are seriously considering creating a possibly expanding business...it would behoove you to study and practice building, texturing, and designing.

I only say these things to you, because I really do care. I care about budding entrepreneurs in SL...I want people to learn to build and design. I hate to see people get frustrated by their company's failure, and watch them leave. If they just put the time into refining their craft...they'd see a difference--Second Life isn't a get-rich-quick application. It's a community with a pulse.

Good luck. If you have any questions, IM me in-world.

Hi Michael. Thanks for your post.

I'm currently trying my hand at building different types of things, in order to learn how and to find out what I enjoy building most. I reckon if it's a joy to build something, that should show up in the quality of the finished article.

So far I've made a scripted balloon that floats in a pretty realistic way and responds to touches. I've also made a swearily offensive (and damn ugly) monkey pet, to see how those sorts of scripts work. I'm currently trying to create a decent looking t-shirt, purely to see how clothing creation works. Next on the list is static objects, eg. furniture, then a vehicle and a weapon.

Hopefully by the time I've built that little lot I'll know where my talents and interests lie. Then I'll pick a product and style at that point. At which point I'll also need to start thinking about marketing etc.

I'm very much at stage 1 at the moment, but thought I'd try putting some of my creations on the market now just to see how that operates.

(Also, my skin makes me look like a badly shaved pimp and I'd like to buy a new one.)

Howdy Mr. Frog,

It looks like you may have found what you need, but if not I may be able to help out. I have a vacant 512 lot that you could use for a few weeks.

I'll be in SL after 4pm SL time today. I can give you a shout then if you are interested.

Mr. Frog,

I'd like to offer you the opportunity to set up a "street vendor" kiosk at our village.

Our smallest open air shop is a bit above your needs...40 prims, L$300 a week. But I think we can work with you.

This thread touches on something I've been wondering if the Hangout crew would be interested in doing. A lot of folks come to the forums who are new to creating, and wouldn't it be cool if we had a 512 next to the hangout where we could put up a single building and give/rent/loan vendor space to new creators?

I know if it was there I would bop on over when I was at the Hangout to see what is new.

Sort of a business incubator. There would need to be a few policies around this, maybe:
-- Incubator administration has the right to refuse any content or avatar for arbitrary reasons (some guidelines could be done)
-- Incubator vendors are free for 90 days, then done, or, if there is free space/prims, rentable?
-- All new businesses will use a standard vendor type provided by the incubator admin
-- May provide a holovendor for people who make furniture etc., but its use may involve a fee
-- Each new business gets a single sign to explain themselves. They provide the texture for it.
-- Avatars who are using the vendors are responsible for all customer service, including stocking and servicing the vendor.

That's a good idea Nika.:) I would do a limit of 30-45 days though,so even more newbies can take advantage of it.

I have an SL Terminal already on my propery. I plan to get an OnRez terminal I am looking for vendors. You can set home to my place. I have room for two more Forum Cartel freebies at 15 prims each.

BTW, a SLEX terminal is 7 prims.

45 days sounds good, possibly extendable to 60 or 90 if there is no one waiting in the queue. This is an excellent idea.

Can I be in charge of arbitrarity and capriciousness? Seriously, I like the idea of a business incubator.

I was going to say yes, but it took so long to get past the 503's I forgot what I wanted to say.

ok i'll start a new thread on the incubator thing, and see what happens ... and return this thread to its original purpose (sorry for the hijack, Mr. Frog!)

I just love saying that: Mr. Frog

/me resists the temptation to run off and see if that name is currently available

I probably haven't got anything I can help you with atm but I did want to say hello to you for being from my home town!

Now, if you went to the Phono in the early 80s, or the Warehouse, or any of the wine bars ... eek!

(Otherwise you're safe!)
