I am having one hell of a time getting voice setup. I've got the Microsoft LifeChat Headset and it works 100% on MSN.

In SL however, people can hear me speak, but i can't hear them or i hear them on my normal speakers.

In windows Audio Device properties, under the Audio tab I have my devices set to my Sound Blaster card.
In the Voice tab, I have the devices set to the headset. On hardware test there, the mic works and I can hear my own voice on the playabck test.

In SL voice chat tab, both the microphone and playback are set to the headset. which is perfect.

However, in SL people can hear me but i can't hear them on the headset. I can only hear them over my normal speakers which will just generate echo and feedback.

I'm at my wits end here.

I had the same issue a while ago, but I am running on Vista so it may be an entirely different problem. What are you running...

Also, if you dont find the answer from someone here, try the Tech forum here /111/1.html

Do you see the little green radiating pulses over avatars heads when they speak?

If so, then I have the stupidest suggestion in the world: I had to crank up all the volume settings on my laptop to max (in windows and SL) to hear people. Even if they were 2 meters away. No idea why.

More details sometimes help, are you running on Vista? I might be able to help but not sure if its the same issue or not.

You could take screenshots of the various control panel sound dialogs and the second life sound settings dialogs and post them.

You might need to go into the Control Panel on your PC and change the settings under Sounds and Audio Devices icon

Control Panel
Sounds and Audio Devices
Audio tab
Default device dropdown menu

Check to see if your headset is on the list and set it to that if its there, you will have to restart SL to see if it works,

Hope this helps!
