Question about the Blogs...

Okay, so I've been around SL since 2006, so please don't assume that because I'm new to the forums I'm an ignorant noob. Besides, even if I WERE an ignorant noob, I'm not stupid, therefore I needn't be treated as such.

That being said, my question is this: Are the Lindens the only people in the SL universe allowed to have an SL-based blog, and if so, why?

I've never been particularly enamored with the forums before, mainly because I'd never took the time to visit. Now that I have, I'm starting to think I enjoy participating in here more than I do in world. I've been a writer for years in RL, and have had blogs in countless other places, but THIS is the ideal place for blogging. A writer couldn't ask for a better medium. Not only could people read your blog, but they could meet you in wold and talk to you directly. It'd be the ultimate author/reader interaction aside from a regular live chat or a face to face, which, in my opinion, SUCKS!

So, what gives? Why can't SL users have their own blogs, and if they can, why is it so difficult to get started? Or, am I really just blind and don't see it? I suppose it's possible that I've overlooked something, but every blog I've seen so far has the name Linden attached to it.

(P.S. How many Lindens are there anyway? Is this like the supreme example of nepotism or what? It's like they dredged up every auntie, uncle, cousin and family dog in the nation just to come help with their project.)

Anyone can start a blog about anything they like. There are several blog hosting sites. Or do you mean a blog on this site?

I wouldn't get too attached to these forums. Their days are numbered.

Linden is the in world last name used by the employees. The CEO of Linden Lab is Mark Kingdon but is known as M Linden in world. That is his avatar name. He took over from Phillip Rosedale who started Linden Lab and the Second Life platform.

SL Universe is a whole different site, that's over the road, as they say around these parts, sometimes!

If you set up a blog, you can put it in your profile as your home page, and you can advertise it in your signature.

I don't know what will happen in the new SL Answers. I think you can only put smiley faces in your signature and you're not allowed to put external links.

So you'd better make hay while the sun shines.

Or go to one of the alternative forums when this closes, where you can put your blog into your profile and your signature.

I'm not a regular here so I don't know, but are these forums definitely closing?

Welcome to the forums! You know, it's an interesting question, because I could swear that long ago and far away, there WERE resident blogs hosted on SL's website. Maybe SuezanneC will stop by, she'd know.

Anyway, nowadays, there are no resident blogs here. But, you can put a link to your blog (hosted elsewhere) in both your inworld and forum profiles. Remember to adhere to SL's trademark guidelines when you name your blog - basically, it can't be SLanything.

I believe there are somewhere around 300 Lindens. However, there are many more Linden names than that, because the names of past employees, just like any other SL names, stay "used" forever.

They say that they are migrating the forums to the blogs, yet they fail to understand that a blog is a blog, not a forum.

A lot of people identify themselves, promote their business, sites and blogs using this feature. there is no indication that LL will give us back those features.

LL is actually the only institute I am aware of, that seems to think that forums and blogs are the same thing.

could be anything. After all, we are talking about a company that cannot even complete such a simple task as remembering setting or staying logged in on the Xstreet sites. Something the average homepage builder can do with their eyes closed.

I've personally found these forums extremely useful. There's certain people who I could probably contact in-world with questions, but it wouldn't be the same.

Can it really be that much of a strain to keep this place open? Not like they're doing any heavy moderating.

Jesus, I went there today for the first time because somebody pointed me to a freebie I might like, what an awful site! I'm not interested in shopping there to begin with, but that site sure didn't do anything to sway me

I don't believe Kingdon nor any of those at the top of the food chain in LL are inept. Nor do I believe they don't know the difference between a Blog and a Forum. I think they know full well what each does and what the strengths and weaknesses of each are. I don't think they want residents to have an easy way to communicate therefore they'll pull the plug here and provide nothing comparable to takes its place. Divide and concur its that simple. Keep the customer in the dark by not giving them any easy way to communicate. No they don't want us making blogs on their blog since we might dissagree with crap they want to push on us. Nor do they want anyone able to see what other residents think. Eventually a serious competitor will come along and those of us sick of LL and their crap will be gone! Then LL and their wonderful corporate and educational buddies can ride the monorail all around their disneyfied, empty monstrosity. Just my 2 cents worth.
