Is there any way to disable bling?

Most merchants don't warn that their products contain bling. I buy them, and they are useless to me. I think that bling is cr*p. I edit and remove the bling script, but that doesn't do anything.

There are scrubber scripts, but I find them very tedious to use. You can try chat commands to turn bling off, usually on channel 1, 55 or 99. for example type /1 bling off, or /55 blingoff, etc. Turning particles off will disable it on your screen, but not someone else's. I hate bling too, I've deleted so many items that I couldn't disable the bling on.

I think usually you can just say "bling off" in chat, and that will turn it off. Not permanently, but for so long as you are wearing the item.

ETA: I really just need to shut up more often, and let people like Brenda talk . . . :o

Scrubber Script:
/54/f5/243995/1.html

The annoying part about it is you have to use the script in each and every prim that blings.

I used NDC Stop That Bling. There were 6 blinging parts, so it was a little tedious, but compared to the tediousness of bling, np. And many items have only one bling.

I also tried various commands. None worked on this object.

Bling is good. The bling is not happy you removed it. The bling will get you for that.

I always try to mod the script out of the blinging part (which can be difficult as sometimes it is stuck away in the tiniest piece) by removing it and using a scrubber script on it. Often the 'bling off' works but remember that you have to do it again each time you teleport. Personally, I don't buy blingy things unless they are either modifiable (so i can take out the script) or have 'bling' instructions included.

Also sometimes (and I know this is just rude) I stand next to someone who is blinging wildly and say "BLING OFF" in chat like I think it will turn off someone else's bling lol

There is always the 'Advanced > Rendering > Attached Particles' option which will do away with any nonsense an avatar cares to emit - no matter how much he wants to be noticed.

The sister option of 'Advanced > Rendering > Attached Lights' is my favourite for canceling those nuclear-powered, halogen facelights that people wear to 'improve' the look of their avatars despite the fact that a closer look at their graphics card and monitor settings might prove to be the saner option all round.

Why you get all this trouble with bling:

1. 'Bling' is created by SL 'particles'
2. Every prim can have 1 particle-emitter
3. You NEED a script to change particles, including turning them off
So:
4. You need to put a script like the one below in EVERY prim that emits bling
5. Unless the specific script that started your bling is there and 'listens' on /1, /55 or whatever, you're just guessing. There being over 2 billion channels the script could be listening on, if it's listening at all, you are unlikely to get the right one without instructions.
6. Taking the bling-script out will not turn off the bling on its own
7. Any merchant that has a script you can talk to in normal chat (channel 0) should be boycotted even quicker than the blingers - these scripts are very laggy.

=======================================
// Short script to turn off particles

default
{
state_entry()
{
llParticleSystem([]);
}
}

And the damn items have to be modifiable, which many are not.

It's the items that aren't modifiable that need to be damned... and their creators too. RL or SL. Microsoft must burn for what they've done in Vista. :(

I would never, ever buy prim clothing or accessories that was non-mod. Am pixie. Always have to adjust prims.

I do not buy no-mod prim clothing, however, for quite a while, I thought jewelry makers all sold their stuff no-mod. I have since found out different and I have kept very few of my no-mod pieces (none if they had bling in them).

Surly there is a way to put one script in the root prim and have it step through all the child prims turning off bling.

If there is not one out there, I will see if I can make one.

Try this. If you can see stuff about php in square brackets, don't copy those tags -- it just means you haven't got the greasemonkey formatting stuff turned on.

Just drop it in the root prim.

The initial script you put in the root prim will copy itself to the child prims, turn off the bling in the root prim if there is any, and then delete itself.

Take the linkset back into your inventory, re-rez it, and set scripts to running from the tools menu (you have to do this -- the taking it back into inventory bit -- or it won't activate). The scripts in the child prims will then turn off bling, if any, and delete themselves, too.

CODE
//Loops through linkset, removing particle effects such as bling.

//this routine lifted from Emma Nowhere's invaluable "Fix Small Prims" script at http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Fix_Small_Prims
GiveScriptToLinkedPrims()
{
integer p = llGetNumberOfPrims();
integer i = 0;
for (i = 2; i <= p; i++)
{
key prim = llGetLinkKey(i);
llGiveInventory(prim, llGetScriptName());
}
}

default
{
state_entry()
{
if(llGetLinkNumber()==1){
llOwnerSay("Getting ready");
GiveScriptToLinkedPrims();
llOwnerSay("Please activate the scripts by taking the linkset back into your inventory and re-rezzing it.\nThen select it with the edit tool choose \"Set Scripts to Running in Selection\" under the Tools menu\nThat's all, folks");
}
llParticleSystem([]);
llRemoveInventory(llGetScriptName());

}

}
