There are times when I am going shopping and the lag is terrible from either bad store design or too many people or some other problems. Any tips on making things faster for those times when you simply must stay?
So far I've tried turning off basic/atmospheric shaders. That helps a bit.
I also turn off people. ctrl-alt-shift-4. That helps make the building and pictures load faster.
I also mute people who look like they have too many prims or flexi-prims on them.
Any other hints?

http://slisweb.sjsu.edu/sl/index.php/Preference_Settings"When you sign on to Second Life, does it look more like a stop-motion video rather than a smooth running program? Does your avatar freeze up? Does it seem like none of your controls are being acknowledged? These oddities are often referred to as "lag". Don't give up, this could possibly be due to your SL preference settings. Assuming that you have met the minimum requirements, you can probably tweak the settings so that Second Life becomes a responsive, enjoyable experience. ..........."

How far is your draw distance set for? The shorter it is, the less you have to see, so fewer textures to load.
How many scripted items are you wearing? Get rid of the radar. Drop anything that listens to channel 0. Those two are some of the worst offenders. Don't wear anything that uses bling, even if you have bling turned off (typically they're channel 0 listeners too, see above).

Draw Distance is my biggie. Sometimes I have to knock it all the way down to 64.

It sounds odd, but a long time ago someone told me to try this and it really does seem to help: pull up your preferences, network tab, and slide the bandwidth slider back and forth a bunch - you don't even need to hit 'apply', just slide it around, then as you see things start rezzing, hit 'cancel' Also, even if I want draw distance up a bit higher for some reason, it a place is rezzing slow, I will drop it down low and then raise it again after the close up stuff comes into view.

Draw distance is the biggy, but also turning down the detail: sun and moon only, low terrain detail, reduce object detail. And increasing the size of the cache.

I make another cup of coffe, take out the trash, maybe play with the cats for a few minutes. Then when I get back everything is ressed.

It may sound odd, but... jump and turn, a few times.
It doesn't necessarily work on images, but the objects tend to rez faster. I must admit, I sometimes feel silly doing it, however it seems to work.
