I now know what an alt. is, and I know what an alt. is used for.
I am quite embarrassed to admit that I just cannot figure out
how to create an alt.
Thanks in advance for any advice, and please don't abuse me

Currently all you do is set up a new basic account, just like you were a new user. Once upon a time Second Life had a system in place for registering a new avatar as an alt, with a fee attached, but there is no longer a way to do that.
