So it's easy to "Say" or "Shout" but why is there no whisper option? anyone know if there is some way of whispering in chat (without scripts) I'm thinking there might be a code, kinda like selecting a channel. Something like.... /Whisper this text will be whispered. I know this doesn't work but thought maybe there is something similar?

just an IM or voice... basically you are looking for something which will limit the distance of chat appearing like the chat is less than a shout? i think the IM takes its place...and one can always "/me whispers to Kitten glancing across the room..." then IM... but i dunno if there is anything more...imma big chatterer...so i would hope id have run across it by now!

What? Can you repeat the question?
People go to IM when they want to whisper. That's about the only option I know of.

I generally think of IMing as a bit like whispering too, esp if the person is right there with you.
If you just want to stop the key clacking noise when you type you can type / as your first character entry in the chat line. I have heard that referred to as whispering at live music events where it is encouraged to minimize distraction from the tunes.

You would need a repeater that is programmed to whisper instead. It is a shame that you have to move between chat and IM windows just to speak softly to people in close proximity, but it makes sense. Start an IM conference if necessary, but those people all need to be your friends. Basically chat in the open or bloat your friends list.

or you could make ...

it a habit to create a whispering group when you have more than one person to IM/whisper to and then delete it after the conversation, and just all chat in group chat for the duration...maybe make the hovering title "Whispering conspiratorily" or something hehehe...

Yeah, this is pretty much how I feel about it. it's no big deal. i just though there might be a trick to do it built in.

Guess if I really wanted to do it I could make a scripted repeater with my avs name that I can just wear as an attachment.

Yeah it's inconsistent, but really the difference between whisper and say is 10 meters vs. 20 meters....? Not a terribly useful thing. I'd imagine llWhisper was just cobbled into LSL as a spam-reducing tactic, and there never was (and never was intended to be) an analogous function for regular avatar typing.

okay, it's scripted, but I have a small HUD which converts everything I say on a certain channel to a whisper.

Yeah, it's very easy, though of course the text appears in the color for scripted object chat. I think I sell one for L$5 in my shop, or maybe it's a freebie, I forget. Just one piece of advice: have it set its name back to something sensible between utterances, so if it gets detached it doesn't appear in your Inventory as "Dire Graves". (Well, I found that disconcerting.) The whispering isn't often very useful, but it's sometimes handy to be wearing an attachment to which you can readily add another script on the spur of the moment.

I note that at http://www.libsecondlife.org/wiki/SLProxy it includes a passage that reads: "/set <packet name> <block name> <field name> <value> All forthcoming packets of type <packet name> will have the field identified by <block name> and <field name> set to <value>. For example, if you say `/set ChatFromViewer ChatData Type 0', everything you say thereafter will be whispered. Values for variable fields will be interpreted as strings unless they begin with a 0x, in which case they will be treated as hexidecimal numerals representing the contents of the field." So it should be possible to modify slproxy in some way to allow one to enter into a Whisper mode. There's a project in Google Code at http://code.google.com/p/stickychat/ related to this. I don't know what the status of this project is.

When I first joined it was possible to Say, Shout, and Whisper. Then on one of the updates they removed Whisper...leaving only Say and Shout. I think

You may be right, FireEyes, I seem to recall a "Talk to" feature that was supposed to be a step below normal chat.

When I joined yes, there was an option for "Whisper" that limited chat to I 'think' under 10 meters.
Yes, it was fairly useless.

Glad to know I am not crazy. I knew at one time there was a whisper, but I can't find it any more. I guess it got phased out somewhere along the way. If I recall correctly, whisper was 10m, talk was 30m, and shout was 100m. I think the shortcut for whisper was ctrl-alt-enter, but I could be wrong.

That whole Library of SecondLife is interesting. I think I might look into it a little later, for now i think I'll just say things normally in chat ...lol
